what are the benefits of sarvanga asan and hal asan. how long should you ideally hold on to the asanas.

I've been in sarvangasana for 5-10 minutes.... that's more Iyengar based and you'd be using props for comfort. I did do shoulder stand without aid. Without the aid of good instruction in these poses you can get hurt. Halasana is usually an eight to ten breath count for me. As Olismom said, NEVER hold a pose that is causing discomfort or undue fatigue. They should feel strenuous but relaxing. Also these are closing postures so they should be done with care and attention. Both links above are great.
