girlscouts are feminists? they promote women's success?.

i realized recently that one of the reasons i view myself more as a person than simply as a female is because i was a girl scout for over five years. in girl scouting we learned about successful women. in fact, men weren't mentioned at all really. lol. i never realized what a huge impact something like that has and promotes in people. so many women don't seem to realize how many truly great, smart, inventive women there have been throughout history. they are soooo brainwashed that its only men who are like this.

were any of you girlscouts? do any of you think about running a troop, especially in the innercities where the kids have no positive adult examples at all?

I was a girl scout, and I think I gained a lot out of it. In fact, my daughter is a girl scout (a daisy) and she loves it. Its one of the things that helped her cope with the move to SD; she made a ton of new friends in her troop. And yes, I love the fact that they make sure to tell the girls about women who have made great acomplishments. People think its all about the cookie sale, but there is just so much more to it. (although my daughter is about to jump out of her skin she is so excited for the start of that sale!)

scouting also has travel. my friends and i were going to go to all the scouting "hotels" world wide after highschool, we had this plan. but by that age, i wanted to go first class instead and went with other friends as i hadn't been a scout by then for awhile. in college it came up again. now that i am old, i am seriously considering contacting my old friends from scouting, whoever is still alive, to finally do the big trip and now that i am old, the scouting hotels sounds much safer and waaay more interesting than the more ordinary first class hotels did. i think it'd be such a cool trip to meet other scouting people from all over the world and what better way to travel! lol.

I was a girl scout for 3 or 4 years as a child. I had a good experience until I got a really bad scout leader who didn't like my mom and as a result picked on me. My most vivid memory of Girl Scouts is being given 1,000 demerits at one time b/c I sighed. For real....I sighed and she started screaming "1,000 demerits, 1,000 demerits."

I don't know why I even put that here b/c it's totally irrelevant to the topic...but for that reason I haven't put any of my children into scouts. It's good to know what positive effect it can potentially have on someone--I never knew you could feel empowered by it and that's awesome. I'll definitely reconsider letting my kids be in scouts.
