Mark was the youngest of my bio children. He was 21 years old when he died. Mark was very family oriented, that is why he was with the man who shot him. His killer is the stepson of my cousin.

The killer's name is David. David is an addict. He dove in and out of various drugs for at least ten years. He was 30 when he murdered my son.

In Febuary of 2005 Mark was at my home to celebrate the 10th birthday of his adoptive brother. He had purchased his first vehicle the day before, he was so proud. That night he told me about David. The man was behaving in a crazy manner. He thought his neighbors were spying on him with cameras in the walls. He thought helicopters were following him. There had been a dinner with Mark and his dad, David was out of it. Mark had tears as he talked about it. I advised him to avoid David. He didn't.

Mark had helped others get away from drugs and straighten out their lives sucessfully, so I am certain that's what he was trying to do. On the night of the murder David pestered Mark to come to his apt. There were several calls and text messages on Marks phone.

Mark went to David's apt, then the two went to a bar where David worked. Mark drank half of a Corona, David kncked back 4 or 5 shots of whiskey. Mark was sitting on a stool playing video poker, David was standing next to him on the right. BLAM!!! A shot rang out.

There was yelling and anger toward David. The bartender ran over and looked into the eyes of my dieing child, Mark's eyes were huge, filled with shock, then they had the look of "all is lost". That's the best way the man could describe it. Then Mark fell to the ground.

Ambulance and police were called. Somebody was performing cpr on Mark. The police looked at him and said "that guy's dead" and offered no aid. The ambulance arrived, the emts stripped my son naked, found the bullet holes and immediately transported him to the er. Three hours later Mark was dead. He bled to death at the hospital. Hemmorage of the right femerol artery. The hospital did nothing to stop the bleeding.

The police immediately arrested David. He was found to be under the influence of methamphetamine, cocain, marijuana and alcohol. According to the DA the drugs and alcohol were a mitigating factor, an excuse. A plea deal was reached, there was no trial, David refused to give any statement, he was sentanced to 18mo to 4 yrs for involuntary manslaughter.
He served almost 2 years until he was released early due to prison over crowding in nevada. His sentance was expired.

Mark was the best person I've ever known. He did not deserve to be murdered. The nutcase who killed him should be locked up for life.

Thanks for telling us about what happened to Mark. You are so lucky to have known him and loved him, what a wonderful young man he was to have been there for others, to have been there for his family members. Thank you for allowing me to know just a little bit about Mark, that broadens my world in a positive way.

I am so sorry that you had to lose your son that way. Violence is always so hard to understand. The girl who broke into our home and murdered my daughter was also on drugs. But she is going to be tried in CA, someday. Her attorney keeps pushing the trial date back. The DA said they are not going to let her off with a plea deal. Maybe it's because she attacked us in our sleep or maybe because we were strangers, but I am glad for that anyway. Who knows how much time she will get here on earth, but I know someday she will have to answer to the ultimate judge. Then justice will finally be done. I hope you can let all the bad things fall away and only remember the good ones. hugs jeanie

Thank you so much for sharing the story. Your son was an amazing guy and I can tell you are SO proud of him ! I am totally SICK by the sentance that Daivd got! It seems to me that the victims are re-victimized so often. How in the world does this happen??? Did you have any input in any of the trial process ??

I have tons of questions for you, but this post is to honor Mark, so I am going to try to be more active here and post a new topic about my Dad, Cecil Mills, and what we are going through. Maybe you can catch up with that post later and reply.

You are in my prayers and I share in our sorrow. I'm so sorry for what you have been going through. :) Sherri
