Group News

The University Depression Study Group consists of a small group of academic researchers devoted to studying depression in an effort to improve the care that people living with depression receive. Our work is made possible through funding from the National Institute of Mental Health.  The UDSG team includes medical professionals, social scientists and statisticians. We utilizes qualitative methods (such a focus groups and cognitive interviewing), survey research methods, and random controlled trials.

Through our partnership with Daily Strength, we hope to develop a community of individuals like you who are willing to participate from time to time in surveys on topics related to depression and depression treatments.  We hope that you will help us to help the community by joining our group.

How It Works

When a new survey is ready for your consideration, a message will be sent out to those individuals who have joined our group through Daily Strength's messaging system.  Each message will describe the study, list any eligibility requirements, and provide a link to the online survey.

Protections

Every survey is first reviewed and approved by a university Institutional Review Board (IRB).  An IRB is a group of researchers unaffiliated with project who examine the study's methods to ensure that the research is ethical and unlikely to harm participants.

Surveys are anonymous. We collect no information that identifies the respondent individually.

The University Depression Study Group, an official DailyStrength.org group, is proud to announce its first of several depression surveys. 

SURVEY TOPIC

This anonymous survey concerns those "ask your doctor about" advertisements for antidepressant medications that you may have seen on television and in magazines or newspapers. These ads are currently being shown in the United States and New Zealand. 
 
WHY YOUR OPINION IS IMPORTANT

No study has ever asked people affected by depression how they feel about these ads. This is your chance to be heard! 
 
ABOUT THE SURVEY

Most people will complete the survey in about 15 minutes or less.  In this survey we will ask you about your awareness of this kind of advertising, your opinions of these ads, and your use of antidepressant advertisements as a source of information about depression. We will also ask you a few questions about your health situation so we can understand better the responses we receive.
 
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS SURVEY?

For this survey we are interested in the opinions of people aged 18 years or older who have a history of depression. This includes people who are dealing with depression at this time AND people who are not currently feeling depressed, but have had at least one bout of depression in their lives. 
 
SILENCE IS GOLDEN

Please do not post comments about the survey until after all data have been collected and we have posted a summary of results.  Such comments could influence how others respond, which would not be a good thing.
