Lost with Hypo Mania

Posted on 09/27/08, 12:19 pm
I have suffered with my nerves for over 3 years. My problems began when I witnessed my fathers death at 15. For many years I didn t know I was unwell.

I have managed without tablets all this time but a few new problems lead me to my GP on 9th July and was prescribed a popular UK drug called Floroxitine or something similar. The doctor asked me if I was Bi Polar before prescribing the drugs - I said I didnt know.

I went away and started taking the tablets without realising that I would be stuck on them for months.

On or around the 7th August I almost committed suicide. I managed to get to sleep by meditating. I may have had some sleep. I got up at around 6am and went outside and felt more alive than I ever had in my entire life. This high continued until My Husband started to realise how strangely I was acting - he got a doctor to me. He prescribed some american drugs (we were in america at this point) and also prescribed re-assurance (as I beleive).

We only just made it home as i had hystryonics on the plane which resulted in a free upgrade to business class.

Since returning to the uk I have seen quite a few "head doctors" most of whom have upset me and set me back a few places.

I dont feel that I am making any progress but do not feel that I can trust the doctors to make me better.

Any pointers?

So sorry to hear about your difficulties. Sounds a little like Bi polar, I think you should get checked to eliminate that and then you can get the proper treatment.

It is now known that some anti depressants can actually make you feel worse and even suicidal, hence the need for your to get properly diagnosed so that you can get properly treated.

I can only suggest that you go back to your doc and asked to be referred to a consultant specialist about the possible disorder of bi polar.

Sometimes we need more than one opinion. Some people are helped tremendously by a medicine that suits thems. Keep on keeping on.

    Good wishes.

I was given fluoxetine and it did make me feel so much worse. I have been prescribed this drug twice in my life. Once in my early twenties and the second time was just a few months ago. On both occassions I tried to kill myself. My GP will not admit that this drug can make you feel worse. I have now been off fluoxetine for just over 4 weeks and feeling better for it.

Thank you so much for responding to my post.

I wish I was you, I am currently taking the maximum dose of Seroquol (queitepine) and I am desperate to get off it but I am told I have to wait a year. In the meantime they are REALLY PRESURIZING me to take a drug called LITHIUM, apparantly it would take me 2 years to get of lithium and goodness knows what the side effects are to that as although they are constantly going on about it nobody has taken the time to give me a list of side effects

Have you been disgnosed with Bi-polar. This drug is used for bi-polar disorger. There are quite a few side effects to this drug. They include: Diarrhea, drowsiness, lack of coordination, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, nausea or vomiting, slurred speech and trembling.

    Hope this helps.

I personally have no experience of Bi-Polar but I have a nephew who has it and, through one of my son's spells in a psychiatric unit, I have come into contact with many 'sufferers' and what you describe here certainly sounds similar. Also, I have made friends through DS who are BP. I am unable to advise you about meds but surely the most important thing for you is that all those chemical imbalances in your brain are stabilised and, whether you like it or not, you need help with that.

There are groups for Bipolar here that you may wish to check out (and join if you feel you can get support to understand)

Possibly best advice I can give as a BP:

Keep trying different psychiatrists till you find one you're comfortable with and them follow their advice. Its not appropriate for us to come up with a diagnosis but if you have mood swings ranging from depression to manic/restless/out of control/irritable, which adversely effect your life (which it sounds like), it is likely that you might have bipolar.

Bipolar is a serious biochemical illness, is permanent and requires medical intervention and control through medication. There are a variety of treatments, the correct one depending on the individual, so does take some trial end error to get it right, but usually involves a combination of anti-depressant, anti-manic and mood stabilizing medicines. Seraquel is used to prevent manic episodes and lithium is a stabilizer. If you are bipolar, side-effects and the hassle of taking medication should be least of your concerns and correctly diagnosing and fighting the illness the first, as its not something that just goes away by itself and untreated bipolars are dangerous to themselves (during depression or panic episodes) and others around them (during manic episodes).

First step to making any progress is taking it as seriously as it needs to be and chasing the doctors around till you find one that can figure out the right treatment for you and then taking your medication diligently. I still kick myself for the time wasted and spent in misery before i decided to get serious about beating the illness. Then come the mind training so we'll leave that till you're past the first hurdle.

    Good luck and best wishes.

hi...i think someone has already covered this but you also need to take a mood stabiliser
just taking anti d's can you push you into a manic state if you have bipolar,
taking a mood stabiliser will stop this.
i remeber being prescribed anti d's when i was younger...looking back at my behaviour i am almost certain that i have a type of bipolar...i took alot of pills but wasnt aware of what i was doing, luckily i was sick prtty soon after.
i was prescribed anti d's again a few years later and i became completely out of control..i spent £10,000 cash, maxed 2 credit cards and nothing to show for this...this was all in the space of a year....
im ok now but my anxiety and low moods are terrible....im irritable all the time and fidgety....can become angry very easily also...i would suggest going back to your GP and changing your medication
    take care
