How deplorable! What do you think?

Posted on 11/05/09, 06:46 pm
I am absolutely angry over reading that certain athletes were allowed to jump the line to receive the H1N1 flu vaccine, during a time when we in Canada are experiencing a shortage of the vaccine!

I mean it! I am absolutely incensed that any healthy grown up would do so! They in effect have sentenced those who need it the most, to having to wait even longer, and perhaps die in the waiting! It angers me, that they got the vaccine, while young children have to wait their turn to get it! What makes me so angry over it all, is that it is primarily children who have been dying from the illness! Even I who am immunity compromised from my illness, am choosing to wait, in favour of letting kids receive the vaccine first!

I sincerely hope that God / Karma pays those selfish people back for what they have done. Or better yet... That fans boycott their games over it! Maybe that will teach them a lesson!

Sorry about the rant over this issue, but this really bothers me. What do you think about it all? Would you boycott teams like these for jumping line?

In NYC companies have ordered the vaccine under the idea that it would be given only to those employees who were high risk. Now they are finding out everyone got it, whether high risk or not. Some of these companies were on Wall Street and were Big Name Banks. No wonder there is a shortage.

Well, since I don't follow hockey, I guess I'm already boycotting it by default.

I'd want to have a bit more proof before I did boycott something. Right now there are those who say yes, and the teams/players seem to be saying no. I am also willing to entertain the notion that some people give preferential treatment to athletes, actors, and other famous people WITHOUT being asked.

But yes, this is a really gnarly issue to untangle. While better procedures are called for, I suspect that the real fix is to improve our system so that we can generate more vaccines in a shorter period of time.

Pepper... there is proof that some team members have already received the vaccines. The teams have already admitted that certain players and staff have received it. (This is just one link to one story.) And it is not just The Toronto Maple leafs, but the Toronto Raptors (a basketball team) as well who have received it.

The article does say that "an Alberta health care worker was fired for giving the Flames preferential treatment", therefore I would say it did happen. What I really don't understand is that these were available to the families of the players also.

But IDK, life is too short too get upset about things like this - at least from my view. There really isn't anything you can do about it anyway.

    Hang in there!

I guess my view is a bit backward, I think those who are not able to get the vaccine are the winners here...I know for sure I won't be getting it, could have done so a week or so ago if I'd wanted to but I've never done these in the past and see no reason to start now.
I do wish those who believe in this stuff and feel the need for them could get it if that is what they want.

If they did indeed jump ahead of others, that is reprehensible.

I'm with you Georgia. I had a flu shot once - and I have never been sicker. I won't get near that shot.

LindaJean. I've had the opposite experience. I still may get a mild flu, but nothing serious. Every time tho that I have missed getting the shot, I've been horribly ill... and for a long time... But this is not just the regular flu shot. It is the one for H1N1. Many people have and are dying from it.

Supposedly these vaccines today are better than those of years ago. People who claim to get the flu from the flu shot would probably not have that experience with vaccines today. But if you are like me, I cannot take that chance. I have emphysema and heart problems. I cannot afford to take a chance. So I have to roll the dice and take my chances. A lady showed up last night to chair an AA meeting. She stated her son had been diagnosed with swine flu. I told her to please leave immediately, that she was putting me and others at risk of catching it from her. Are people being that stupid out there?

Happy2... Ouch! Thats a hard one to call. She may have really needed the meeting with her kid sick like that. At the same time I understand your concern over catching it. Maybe people will need to start wearing surgical face masks to the meetings?
