my mother has bi-polar with major depressive disorder and recurring episodes of psychotic. I have been going to a load of dr's since 1998, how come i can not get a solid answer for what i have. I personally believe that i am bipolar, but needless to say dr's are still trying to figure me out. i have been on a very low dose of meds since jan. 2009 because they want to monitor me now.....and my goodness now it's sept. 2009 and i'm still on the same meds with no help. i voiced my concerns, and all i get is.....are you suicidal? i say no and they keep me on the same meds and now they have sent me to 2 different psychologists. how long did it take for other people to get a diagnosis? because for me it's now going on to 9 years. never ever got a real straight answer on my problem

I was bi-polar either all my life or since 7th grade. I was only fully diagnosed at age 35. It took a psychotic episode to get me on meds and diagnosed fully.
    What meds are you on?

Once I started having more serious symptoms it only took a couple of months. BUT, I started having some symptoms as early as 7 years old. At 15, I was dx'd with depression. At. 20 I was dx'd with panic disorder. At 25 I was dx'd with Generalized Anxiety disorder w/ major depression and by 27 I was dx'd BP.

Sometimes it takes a really long time to land a BP dx. They usually want to make sure to rule everything else out before giving you that dx.

I was bipolar around 9 or 10 but my dx didn't come until I was almost 43.
I had been in therapy since 18 and went to a psych ward for ideations and depression for six weeks at 26. I got Prozac for eating disorder and major depression then and it flipped me out. From then on it was Zoloft, Paxil and they made me ideate. I was dx with GAD,SAD and chronic depression excerbated by post partum depression at 40. Then it was Celexa, Lexapro, Cymbalta and then Effexor and Abilify from 40-41. Again, no bipolar dx just major depression, GAD, SAD and then came the pdoc who tried Lithium and Klonopin and the launched me into the pit of hell. Then finally I got this great tdoc who got me into see the best pdoc in the world! I got my dx then and over three years later I am having the episodes and stuff of a bipolar. Dang, it took so long! My dad was bp! My mom is borderline personality, GAD and chronicaly depressed and has had depression so bad she's had about 12 ECT's. Come on...I thought it was about time.
