Very sick baby :(

I just wanted to vent a little about how our week has been going in our house. I am so scared and worried about my son that I can't even sleep at night! On Saturday my son started coughing and by monday morning he was coughing so terribly he would cry every time he coughed. Well I took him into the clinic to find out what is wrong and he has severe RSV. This is a respiratory virus that swells and clogs airways in children under a year old. He has already had one over night hospitalization from this because he refused to drink anything for over 24 hours and got so dehydrated that he needed an IV drip for fluids. He is still coughing like no baby should cough and barely sleeps at night. He is drinking a little better today and actually slept for five hours last night (nothing compared to his usual 12 hours). I am just so terrified that we are going to end up back in the hospital again because its been 5 days and nothing seems to get better. He's also got a diaper rash from HELL so every time I change his diaper (which is often to get rid of the rash) he cries so hard he sends himself into another coughing fit which usually ends in throwing up because the coughing is so deep and harsh. I've got him constantly by a waterless vaporizer and cool humidifier with vicks ointment all over him and trying to get him to drink pedialyte even though he hates it. I am just completely exhausted and don't know what to do anymore, praying this virus will pass soon (even though some medical sites say it lasts up to 2 weeks)!

I guess I should also mention that this virus can actually lead to death in some infants and I recently had a friend who's child was hospitalized for a week with this. It can cause bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants and lead to severe asthma and breathing difficulties so I have to be with him 24/7 to watch his breathing to make sure that he can actually breathe well. -

I am so sorry. I hope that lil man gets better and fast too. I how how you feel in a way. My 21 month old son was in the hospital in Nashville,Tn (Vandy) for 10 days with an ecoli infecation in his bladder. It was so had to see him having the ivs in his arm and watching them pock him 7 times to get one in his arm and then 3 days later they went in his leg (ankle) to put in a central line to give him his meds where they wouldnt hurt him when the IV was going. It was painful and I was up there with him the whole 10 days and away from my now 7 year old son. To this day he still has a mark on his ankle where the central line was at. I wish no child to go through anything like this or what you lil boy is going through. I would take it from him if I could. -

Thanks! Its just so hard going through this and not getting sleep myself because I am so scared he will stop breathing. We have him on a nebulizer treatment now every four hours. He has a steroid and a decongestant that he has to inhale for 15 minutes every time we do it. For the first few days its been rough since I have to do it 24 hours a day so we only get about 3 hours of sleep at a time. His cough is starting to get better but the dehydration isn't improving. He only drinks about 8 ounces a day but as long as he keeps that up he doesn't have to be hospitalized. We just keep praying that he gets better with no complications because I have heard so many horror stories!
