Swine Flu Uk a case study

Posted on 10/12/09, 06:59 pm
Here in the UK, swine flu is actually quite prevalent. We are told to ring our GP's if we have pre-existing conditions or children under 5. Which is indeed what I did this weekend with my 4 year old. We were told to visit an out of hours doctors unit, where we were ushered into a back room with other suspected patients with Swine flu gathered, and told to wear masks, before being seen by a doctor who decided whether we should take anti-virals.
We indeed were prescribed tamiflu, after they measured my daughters temperature, and I was surprised that they didn't actually test her for Swine Flu, just diagnosed her with "Suspected Swine Flu" and sent her home to rest. We were given instructions that we should not leave home until she has returned to health and to keep her off school until symptoms had passed, and to ring for an ambulance if she started to struggle with breathing.
I informed her school this morning, and was amazed at the flippancy of the secretaries who didn't really know what to do with such information. Other than "perhaps she should stay home for 2 weeks?".
I know who my daughter caught it off. There was a boy at school the week previous, who was actually sick in school, he had this awful cough, and his mother kept sending him to school, for the school to send him home, because she "didn't want him at home all day he does my (her) head in"
We need a policy here, forcing all children with suspected or flu like symptoms to stay home. Her child doesn't have pre-existing conditions like my daughter, she's very lucky he coped with his, she's also very lucky her laissez faire attitude and very selfish behaviour didn't lead to serious complications for her son. She didn't even contact a doctor.
It seems this is the case frequently here, people are adopting the attitude that Swine Flu is nothing, and until someone they know dies from it, they aren't really bothered. Something needs to be done now. So I sit here with a very sick child, when this could have probably been prevented. Prevention is better than cure. Cure should be a last option.
