Unsure how many of you know about this. i wish i had heard about it and done it BEFORE i got my back money as it would have saved me a LOT in check cashing fees.
The Government has a card JUST for SSI and SSDI etc recipients.
It is FREE and easy
Your check is pout on it each month at 1AM of whatever day your check comes on If it comes out on the 30th because of the weekend Your check comes on the 30th at 1AM .
You can use it to pay your bills online or by phone I love that and you can get one free withdrawal at the listed ATM machines After that they say they charge but i have found if i always use the ones i ntheir list I never have to pay.
If you own money to people which I owed a LOT by the time 7 years passed and i got mine They can NOT touch this money.
(They can not touch your bank accounts either but i discovered they CAN place a hold on a normal bank account and make you Prove it is from SSI Something that worried me and another reason I love this program )
Mind you i am NOT being paid in anyway for this post just honestly Love the ease of getting it without waiting for my mailman worrying that he places it in another persons box and they not bring it to me (this happens often here with our mail)
I also paid like 400.00 at a check cashing place to get my check cashed when I got my biggest back pay check. Had i known about this that 2would have been Money in my pocket.
The site is here

you sign up In some cases you need to send more info to identify yourself and then they send you your card
They send the check until you have the card.
Anyway was unsure who may know about it
Hope it helps others

I think this might be someting new. They are doing this more with lots of different sources like paychecks, any state assistance, etc. So, it makes sense to me and I would have thought they would have sent out notices to those of us getting benefits like they did with the direct deposit of SSA instead of a papercheck. -

I am not sure why they do not make more people aware of it. I love that it makes things easier and saves me 15.00 almost in check cashing fees.
Glad i could share something helpful -

This program just begun September 1st. For those already on SSI or SSDI, the mailings to 13 southern states will take place in October and all other states will get the mailings in January 2010. -

I wonder if it will be a mandatory thing at some point. It would do away with paper checks and I am not sure what else it would streamline but it is being done more and more with paychecks, etc.
Its kind of interesting though. -

We opted to change my husband's SSD to a card and we do love it. If ever I do get approved for SSD (I have been ill since 2006, now fainting or near-fainting several times a day) I will be using a card.
Welcome
