I need some questions answered

K on april 10th I went to the dr cause I had been feeling really really tired, then i was having mid-flank pain on both sides, and burning with urination so i thought UTI, well the dr did a urinalysis and then called me that afternoon and told me that my urine was positive for bacteria so they called in Bactrum, I took that for 5 days 2times a day. I started feeling better, so I though it had to be gone, mother nature came calling with my monthly gift, then about a week after that I started noticing my flank pain had returned, and I was have pain with urination again off and on, more off than on really. So i finally sucked it up and call the dr today and went back into the office for another urinalysis. I ended up waiting in the office for the results, my urine must have been positive again, because they put me on Cipro for 5 days twice a day this time. Then the nurse told me "last time your urine culture came back negative", so this time she wants you to get a renal ultrasound. The nurse also said that the dr wants to rule out kidney stones. So does that mean I never had bacteria in my urine to begin with last time, and then why was I told that i did. Is it possible to dip test urine for bacteria and it to be positive and then the culture to come out negative?

Dips test for a number of things in your urine, including nitrites, which are a sign of bacteria generally as they are produced by bacteria consumption, or perhaps proteins. Now, if a dip tests positive for nits, it's generally considered positive. However, the culture can come back negative for bacteria if the bacteria is not actually present, or perhaps if the bacteria is somewhere else. Furthermore, a dip can be positive for nits and proteins if there are other problems with the urinary tract. Now, let's say your second culture comes back positive. UTIs can happen for a number of reasons as long as there is urinary stasis.

So, I suppose the answer is yes!
