Putting things in terms we can all understand
Posted on 09/08/08, 05:17 am
Hi, I have just joined this group and am appreciative of the offer from Miton.
I would like to say that I find it really hard to understand what some of the people in this group are saying.
I dad is an intellectual and used words that I didn't know and it put me off wanting to know people like that.
I thought it wasn't fair that he spoke like that as I didn't have the same intelligence and education as him, so there for felt inferior to him.
I think its great to have the capacity to know lot of things, but really if you want people to understand what you are saying then making things easy to read it the best way to get your point accross.
I read this great book on philosophy by Lou Marinoff called 'Therapy for the Sane. Now that guy was able to put into laymans terms philosophy for everyone to use. To me that is more intelligent and useful.
Another book like 'Sophie's World' by Jostein Gardener, made me want to learn all about philosophy and also made me realise it is something I can apply in everyday life.
One of the biggest blessings in life is to be able to help others and helping others to feel good about themselves is a great virtue.
Well what do you think?
