Slow Reader

Posted on 02/04/09, 08:03 pm
I was wondering if you all could help me. My daughter is in the 2nd grade & is struggling at reading to say the least. Do you have any suggestions on books I can check out at the library to help her. She's very stumbly reading & needs to really work on her fluency. Any responses are appreciated. Thanks :-)

What about Dr. Seuss, or those small books by Sesame Street characters... I'll keep thinking but when I was her age, I loved reading those.

She may need to find a
    subject matter that she
    is really interested in.
    I remember having the
    most difficulty with stuff
    that I did not like.

I second the Dr. Suess idea. The rhyming helps a child develop a cadence to their reading that helps them overcome stumbling. It is similar to the treatment used to treat stuttering. Also, children's audio books, so she can read along with the actors and readers who infuse a more life-like aspect to the story.
