One hundred and fifty years ago, Iowa’s 36 million acres were 85% covered with tall-grass prairie. It was a place that was home to hundreds of plant species, more than 350 types of birds, nearly 100 kinds of mammals, thousands of insects and a multitude of amphibians, reptiles and fish. As we drove 20 miles east of Des Moines, down a highway that was laid amidst cornfields, soybeans and timber, we began to think of the vastness and what it must have been like when the first settlers embarked on a journey across the plains. Sitting in a comfortable car with air conditioning, we had to strain for our minds to comprehend what it must have been like for these early pioneers. What kind of determination and strength of will they must have possessed to set out in covered wagons with hard board seats into a land where no town could be seen and not a soul existed anywhere in the distance. What amazing spirits and belief in their futures they must have summoned to trust their fate and future to the dreams that only their mind could envision.
