hair twisting and inability to wash hair properly
Posted on 09/24/09, 01:04 pm
Our 16 year old has an inability to properly wash his hair. He also doesn't care if it is brushed out or not. His constant twisting of a few strands in the front of his head really irritates me. Is there a way to help him overcome this habit and learn better hygiene. Also he had a counselor come and talk to him every week last year at school. No help whatsoever because he didn't talk. He seldom talks to anyone. Please any suggestions?

Have you asked him why he does not want to wash his hair? Is he high functioning or not? How old is he? thanks -

Our son is high functioning as far as intelligence, but motor skills are very difficult. His dad has been washing his hair every day or two and that satisfies us all. I guess I have too high expectations of him,. One day he will care about how he looks, but not now. Things bother me that don't seem to bother him and I have got to let my fears go and trust him and God to work things out. We try our best, just wish he could have at least one good friend. He seems more isolated this year at school because the girls who befriended him about three years ago have graduated. I know no one with similar problem as AS and it can be very difficult to understand or explain to others. Our son's dad and paternal grandmother are very anti-social but don't seem to have AS. I have never fully understood their wanting to be separate from other people and avoiding others, but I love them all dearly. Our son is 16. He didn't learn to tie his shoes until about 12, but now neverties them, just like his grandmother.
