Hi: In response to your question about seeking a psychiatrist rather than a general practitioner for psych meds, YES, YES, YES. I also survived a violent childhood and early years of violence in my marriage. (We both changed, and things improved. Stranger things have happened, but I know that's rare.)
Anyway, I saw a minimally trained psychotherapist for eight years and got my psych meds from my family doc and guess what!? Neither one of them had the right diagnosis or treatment for me. Turns out I have Attention Deficit Disorder as well as PTSD but was diagnosed with depression and a personality disorder -- which is common when a practitioner concludes you're just stubbornly refusing to change. Also, you might want to join the other PTSD group here at DS, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which has a lot of members -- that way you can get even more support.

PTSD/DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

I grew up in a very violent home, then married a very violent man. We are now divorced 10 years, but the PTSD I have been diagnosed with seems to be controlling my life. I have flashbacks, recurrent night terrors, and am generally depressed 24/7. Can anyone offer any suggestions of how I might go about getting some treatment for this. I am on Zoloft and Xanax prescribed by my physician, but of course they make you feel like a drug seeker when they have to give you Xanax, even though I am clearly not one. I hate that feeling you get when you request a refill and they give you that "look." Has anyone else experienced this? Maybe I should be seeking my psychiatric meds through a psychiatrist and not an general practioner who just doesn't seem to "get it." Anyway, thanks for listening. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm so depressed I don't even want to leave my home. Lucky for me I work from home.
