Urgent Prayers Needed!

Posted on 10/15/09, 01:52 pm
This is from a friend of mine Maria... She is asking for urgent prayers.

Seven weeks early, Tanner Jacob Downey arrived Sunday, October 11 at 6:15 am, 4 lbs. 6 oz., 17.25â.I received a phone call early Friday morning that Kristinâs water had broken, and she, Kurtie, and my mom were on their way to Geisinger and that I needed to get to the house right away to watch the kids. Once they checked in, the staff tried everything in their power to hold Tanner off, but to no avail. The plan was to pump her with magnesium to stop the contractions and dilation. They told her that even though her water had broken, she could potentially go another two weeks before they would need to go in after him. Anyway, they started the magnesium and gave her the first round of steroids to try to ready his lungs for life outside the womb. Early Saturday morning, the staff took her off of the magnesium because her arms and legs went numb. She received her second round of steroids. At 3:00 pm, I received an urgent call from my mom telling me to get in the car and get to the hospital immediately. Kristin had an allergic reaction to something they were pumping her with and she crashed. A code blue was called, and no less than 30 Geisinger employees flooded her room to try and get her back. They were successful. Through the entire ordeal, Tanner didnât skip a beat. The kid was a trooper. I spent the day at the hospital with the clan and went back home when Kristin seemed stable. I got another phone call from my mother at 2am Sunday to go watch the kids. It was show time. Kristin had gotten up to go to the bathroom and couldnât get back to bed- Tanner was on his way. At 6:15 am, the baby bells went off at the hospital- he had arrived. Now, the issues. A vast array of specialists are working with Tanner. A quick rundown of his situation:Things we knew-
Hydrocephalus: there is LOTS of fluid in Tannerâs head-His belly is not connected to his intestines.Things we didnât know-The lower left quadrant of his heart is too small. It is functioning, but small. His kidneys are too small even for a baby his size. They are working.....barely. He is getting yellower and yellower as the day goes by.He has a non-deforming cleft palate. Not noticeable from the outside, but the roof of his mouth never formed. There isnât as much fluid in his head as originally thought, but was found yesterday through ultrasound to be an empty cavity. His brain never separated into two lobes, rather one large mass.Tanner is responding to us talking to him and to other stimuli. I finally got to see him today. He is sooooooooo little! While I was there he got the hiccups....it was precious. He flinches with pain and to bright lights and noise. This is showing us that there is brain function, but the neurologists are not sure where the ceiling is. They NEED to get an MRI which will help them determine a concrete plan of action. He needs to get the surgeries underway ASAP. The NIC U will not release him for an MRI because he cannot maintain a body temperature. This is something that all premies have trouble with, and the doctors are not sure if this is a premie problem, or if it is one function that his brain will not support. They are afraid to stress him out by placing him in the cold MRI room/table, so they are trying to come up with another solution. The request:My family and I are requesting that any of you who believe in a higher power- whether it be God, Buddha, Allah, a bartender or a fuzzy-haired troll that sits on your computer desk- to start praying fervently that Tanner pulls through this. If you have any friends or a church group that would do the same, we would also appreciate that. Tanner has made it through his first 48 hours without any major glitches. He is a fighter. I also ask you to keep Kristin, Kurtie, and my mom in your thoughts as well. They have all made it to their breaking points, and they need the strength to help Tanner along.

Welcome
