SOUNDTRACK OF MY YOUTH

What are the songs you remember from your childhood? You know as well as I do that the stuff they play on the "oldies" stations is only a small glimpse of what was really happening in music in the Peyton Place era. Paste links to YouTube clips or other sound or video files and ... lay some grooves on us.

Jeannie C. Riley: Harper Valley PTA
(Do I get extra points because the song actually uses the phrase "Peyton Place?" How about for the boots shots in this video?) -

So as I promised our beloved moderator- here was my music progression via youtube, or "How you go from Heavy Metal to Rap to Jazz to Rock"
1. KISS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoL...
2. SUPERTRAMP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBA...
(Lots of odd groups here...chicago, disco duck...no real taste)
3. THE WHO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKU...
(Followed by a host of 60's rock bands and the standard Led Zeppelin)
4. Above "JUDAS PRIEST" (followed by a host of heavy metal)
5. Above "WHODINI" (Followed by a host of early rap)
6. PUBLIC ENEMY (still a favorite song) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLh...
7. ELLA (An all time favorite) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=421...
(Followed by a lot of testing out of Jazz and big band)
8. MODEST MOUSE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLk...
And just because I wanted to add it: JOSE GONZALEZ

Holy Moly, y'all had some radical transitions ... though Ms. B at least held on to a boot and booty shake fascination. I usually think of what was on the radio when I was between 6 and 13 years old (which was when my big sister was between 11 and 18) as "when I was growing up." I think my favorite song on the radio was "I Don't Wanna Play House" by Tammy Wynette. By the time I was a teenager, I was pretty hung up with Elvis and when he died I got into some other 60s rock and R&B like Gene Pitney and Sam Cooke and then into a long phase of Dinah Washington and some of her imitators. By the time I was 19 I was back in love with Tammy Wynette and I she remained my great fixation until she died 17 years later.
I never made it to the Queen-Kiss-Rush stuff or even the David Bowie-Rod Stewart British scene. Janis Joplin was as radical as I got and that was more from a blues/country angle than from the rock side of it. I still file her music with my blues records/CDs at home. -

Supertramp was on the radio, along with Led Zeppelin and queen...the music of an indutrial area. I thought it would be nice to add the transitions. -

I loved that Supertramp "Breakfast of Champions" album cover and I do recognize the songs you posted from Supertramp and The Who. Some of the links are broken now .... it happens fast on YouTube ... so I'm glad I watched when I did. My nephews love Led Zeppelin. I'm not sure I'd recognize anything from them except "Stairway to Heaven." I do like the Yardbirds, though (from which they evolved) and there's so many people associated with Led Zeppelin/The New Yardbirds (Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Jeff Beck, Terry Reid) that have been part of one thing or another I listened to, yet I somehow never got hooked on Led Zeppelin! I'm more into the psychedelic rock I guess than the heavy metal side of it, and even then I lean more towards the outer edges - either the pop side or the blues side, but not so much the rock part. Picky, huh?
If you've never heard of this man, Terry Reid, he was asked to be the lead singer for the Yardbirds when they were become the New Yardbirds (for one month and then became Led Zeppelin) but he had a commitment to open for the Rolling Stones upcoming tour so he recommended Robert Plant for the job. This is my favorite Terry Reid song:
