I know Joe South wrote the song and Billy Joe Royal recorded it in 1967, and I think Deep Purple had it out not long after --68 or 69.
Even Better! I found this marvelous clip of a medley of Georgia boys: Joe South, Tommy Roe and Billy Joe Royal. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I had a major crush on Billy Joe when I was about 5, though I didn't know it was called a crush at the time. All 3 of them are super talents.
