My kitten bites my dog

Posted on 08/13/09, 04:14 am
I was just wondering if any new kitten owners have ever had trouble with it constantly biting your dog? I have a 6 year old min pin and a 3 month old kitten. It's the kitten's mission to torment my dog unless I separate them. He will jump on her back and bite her ears and face. My dog is too sweet and won't fight back. Any ideas on how can I stop the kitten from doing this?

He is probably just playing; he needs something else to distract him. Until he gets a little older, you might want to separate them for a part of the day to give the poor dog a bit of a rest. You can also make a toy for him out of an old fishing pole, some cord, and a toy mouse or bundle of feathers. This is something that you can use to wear him down a lottle bit so that the dog gets a break now and then. This is the main reason why they say it is better to have more than one kitten at a time; they can wear each other out.

I rescued my 16 year old cat from city streets. He was about 6 mo. old. As it turned out, he would attack dogs passing by or stopping in the yard. I was so embarrassed! He would run at them, and then jump in the middle of their backs! And he always picked on the large breed dogs...the little ones didn't interest him. We got a puppy when the cat was about 4 yrs old, and the new dog would not back down. They bloodied and bruised each other for the first weekend, and then they came to an uneasy truce. Over the years, they protected each other from other animals. If the cat was out hunting, and heard the dog bark, he'd come running to help. And if the cat was in trouble, the dog would race to his defense. Now the cat can't jump anymore, so at least things have quieted on that front. So, love that feisty little kitten. He sounds pretty special!

It could be that the kitten is trying to establish his "place in the pack". Pets don't view you as a person and the dog as a dog, to him everyone is a cat and he wants to find his place. It is natural for any animal to seek dominence over someone in the pack (family). Since your dog is not fighting back, she basically told the kitten "You're the boss".

I think that's sweet when your kitten doing. Maybe your dog will play back sometime soon. Our 5 yr. old male cat loves our 13 yr. old male Jack Russel Terrior. The cat told the dog a long time ago he was the boss. They love each other & come to their aide if in trouble. Our cat still smacks the dog when they pass. Everything in our house is his toy too.
