The Autumn of our Years
Posted by Vteacher - 07/17/08, 10:07 amCome and share with me all the things we have experienced and seen in our half a century and plus. All the changes, the wonders, tragedies, lessons learned. We are special and have so much to be proud of.

This is a good post. I was 25 yrs old when my girlfriend and I decided to go to Calif. We lived in Michigan and left for Calif. with $500.00 each. No place to go to nor had a job lined up. To be so young again and have no worries. Anyways, we got to San Francisco in 1964 and could not believe all the hustle and bustle in this city. We thought we had the world by its tail.
We both finally got a job in San Francisco and stayed there for about 2 months. At that time it was very expensive. A decent apartment cost $200.00 a month and that we could not afford Look at prices today LOL.
Then we moved to So Calif and tried to looking for jobs and could not find a thing. We even went to a factory to find work (when you need the money you will do anything) well anyways the gentleman in charge said "we cannot let you do that kind of work (huh) we made one mistake we went all dressed up and should of gone with our hair in curlers and jeans and maybe they would of hired us..
We tried for two months to find a job and my girlfriend's mom sent us $20.00 which we had to let it last for two months. We had our electricity cut off as we did not have the money to pay for it. We ate eggs and pickles for two months (today I do not like eggs) and then we finally moved to Los Angeles and looked for an unfurnished apt, as they were cheaper. We slept on floors and ate out of one pan with two forks for six (6) months. We were very poor. We did get out of this mess but you know it does make a person stronger.
I hope that it never gets that way again; however if it did we could survive but the kids today would not know how to survive.
I am married today and we are doing fine but it sure puts a different light on things.
