Vitamin D: Vital Role in Your Health: Researchers conclude the "sunshine vitamin" is good medicine. By Richard Trubo WebMD Feature Reviewed By Louise Chang, MD "mounting evidence that links LOW levels of the VITAMINS to an INCREASED risk of type 1 diabetes, muscle and bone pain, and, perhaps more serious, cancers of the breast, colon, prostate, ovaries, esophagus, and lymphatic system."
"If you're trying to reduce your risk of diabetes, or lower your chances of heart attacks, rheumatoid arthritis, or multiple sclerosis, then vitamin D should be at the front of the line in your daily supplement regimen"

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin the body needs to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the body. It is best known for its role in using calcium to help build bones and keep them strong. (See also Calcium.) Vitamin D affects many other tissues of the body, including the kidneys, intestines, and parathyroid glands.
Some experts note that vitamin D acts more like a hormone than a vitamin, in part because the body can make its own vitamin D if the skin gets enough ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight.

It Goes on to say that Steriods reduce absorption and metabolism of vitamin D and calcium(needed for B12 absorption)

Restless Leg Syndrome is classified as a "motion disorder" where nerves feel like they must move.
This study shows how a iron deficiency due to a defect in the absorption process is at the root cause for some RLS patients.
Specifically a lack of a protein needed for iron absoroption leads to an iron deficiency at the cell level.

Research ties vitamin B12 and Folate deficiencies wit Alzheimer's Disease.
I think the title is self-explainitory.
FYI Folate is NOT folic acid it is another name for B9

Realize that some of these issue have been confirmed as Malabsorption problems.

A vitamin deficiency is due to a person NOT ingesting enough of a vitamin or in the case of Vitamin D3(activated in skin by sun) not enough sun exposure ie 10-15min a day.

MALabsorption issue (absorption problem) is when a person DOES take in enough nutrients but a PROBLEM in the body keeps the nutrients from getting to the cells(step beyond blood).

The RLS study proved MALabsorption was at the heart of the problem as I believe some of these other diseases may be caused by ie MS, RA, etc.

See my vitamin B12 and D Absorption Flowcharts in this Neuropathy group. They are incomplete but are a good place to start. I created these flowcharts from READING MANY medical abstracts from places like medline, etc

If you are interested in reading more about my MALabsorption theory which I believe is a DIFFERENT absorption problem of a few key nutrients in the body in DIFFERNT people then you can go to the following links.

The reason for me puting out info on B12 & B9 defic. tied to Alzheimer's disease is because MS "brain fog" symptoms seem so similar to this disease. There are other studies out there saying these vitamins or better stated the lack of key nutrients like these are correlated to higher risk of dementia.

Question: Has anyone with MS or RA gotten a blood workup with:
    1. 25 hydrox-Vit D
    2. Homocysteine & Methyl Malonic Acid (B12 in cell, step beyond blood)
    3. B panel
    4. Hormone levels (estriol levels)
    etc..
If you have please post results of these specific tests above especially for 1 and 2.

    -THANKS

My rheumy , neurologist, or reg. dr. hasnt ordered those tests. Makes me wonder why. I have RA, dystonia, myofascial, sjogrens, and fibro. Should I be asking for them?

I would ask for the following plus what ever you and your doc want.

    1) Homocysteine & Methyl MalonicAcid - (B12 in the cell itself)
    2) DEXA
    3)CBC(includes Diff/Plt)
    4)Comprehensive Metabolic Panel w/Egfr
    3) Tsh, 3rd Generation
    4)Lipid Panel
    5)Folate, Serum
    6)Vitamin B12 (blood refrig)
    7) Magnesium
    8)Celiac Disease
9)Helicobater Pylori lgg Antibody (infection in intestines)
    10)Copper
    11)Selenium (frozen)
    12)Zinc
13)Fatty Acid Profile, Essential S (frozen)
    14)Vitamin B1, whole blood (fozen)
    15)Vitamin B2 (frozen)
    16) Niacin (frozen)
    17) Vitamin B6 (frozen)
    18) Vitamin D with DOH
    19) Calcium
    20) Potassium
    21) Iron
    22.) 25 hydrox-Vit D

Someone shared this info with me so I will post.

In the nervous system, calpain activation is believed to be responsible for the calcium-mediated cell injury seen in ischaemic stroke (Bartus et al., 1995), spinal cord injury (Li et al., 1995), closed head injury

So this validates the trauma theory for some.
