when do you know if you should go up to 4.5 LDN?

Posted on 05/13/09, 06:13 pm
I'm on 3mg's so far. I'm just starting month #3 on LDN and was just wondering if I should try to increase to 3.5-4.0 or 4.5. I know someone who is on 4.5 and also is on the Tysabri trial. He's doing great! He has even cut the grass a couple times which he hasn't done in years. Hope everyone's doing good. =)

The only problem I have with 4.5 is increased leg stiffness, so I try it for a while then go back to 3. It's all trial and error.

I tried 4.5 for 38 days the first time, then 6 months later for 12, and 4 years later for 12 again.

3.0 is my dose. but try 4.5 for at least 2-3 weeks and see for yourself.

I am a patient man, we shall see I guess, would be happy to hear your vetran opinions.

Opinions on what time of day to take LDN vary greatly as do patient experiences with effectiveness of day or night time dosing. There is more to its effect than raising endorphin levels so it may depend on which effect is having the more affect on your condition. Ian Zagon, PhD and Tom Gihooly, MD both say day or night does not matter.

"The other theory is that LDN reduces peroxynitrite production which in many ways makes more sense in autoimmune disease. . . it could be that both actions are important as increased endorphins will reduce nitric oxide production which in turn reduces peroxynitrites. We also suspect that LDN reduced superoxide production . . ."

Some patients say they do fine on day time, others say only night time works for them. Many with MS say night time definitely is the best time. So the jury is still out, more research is needed. Until then we have only our own experience and other's stories.

There are a number of suggested natural sleep aids that may help. I have good results with timed release Melatonin. I use Source Naturals 3 mg TR and take 2 just before I go to sleep, they act for about 6 hours. I also take 1 or 2 mg of sub lingual Melatonin for a quick release. Between the two I can generally sleep a solid 6 hours although sometimes I still have vivid dreams just before waking after 6 hours.

I think I may have been taking too much, started at 4.5 mg, tried switching to day time dosing after 9 days, then reduced to 3 mg after another three days. I had bad headaches and jaw pain so quit for four days and my side effects disappeared. I was using a 10% DMSO topical liquid which may have been delivering too high of a dose to my brain. After a short break I am going to try the oral liquid starting a 1.5 mg and working up. I will also try night time dosing again to start out with. I am hopeful that I will not have the side effects.

Some studies suggest that Melatonin might make MS worse. I believe that is true in my case.

Sentient, do you have a theory on why melatonin might make MS worse? I am just curious. Thanks in advance.
