Read the story

Just got done reading the story of the 15 year old girl that got gang raped outside of her high school homecoming dance. It is such a horrible thing that happened to her, but even more horrible is the way people in my state are looking at it. I unfortunately live in Utah, which is a terrible place to be for people for like us. (I can go into more detail if you want. People disgust me here). They are saying that it's her fault as this happened because she accepted the alcohol she was offered before the rape. I hate where I live. People here are so close minded. Rape, gay marriage, etc. This place kills me every day.
My family is here so I can't leave, but it hurts me so much to stay. How do you all cope with the horrible things that happen in the world, and even better, how to you stay in a place that is so full of hatred and ignorance???

hello Kim...I'm not sure what to say but I didn't want to ignore you. I do agree that it is frustrating to feel stuck with people who seem to be closed minded or judgmental.

As you said, there are so many horrible things happening in the world. I don't cope with it very well. I feel overwhelmed & sad.

Sometimes I think the fault is with our society...but then I realize it is the same everywhere.

Sometimes I wonder if there is a better place to live. But where?

" People here are so close minded. Rape, gay marriage, etc. This place kills me every day." Yep, that's what holier-than-thou organized religion can do for a person. Are these the same people that originally settled Utah and have a history of poligamy and child marriages (i.e., Colorado City, AZ).

These people live in a world of fear because that is how they have been taught to live. They fear God, their religious leaders, the government, their neighbors, and anybody that does not align with their beliefs. They profess love and tolerance, but are the first to condemn and persecute that which is different from them. This is the same mentality that spawned the witch hunts and burnings during our country's infancy. I am often amazed and dismayed to find it alive and well in this day and age.

How do you cope and live with it? My honest answer is, unfortunately, "Beats me." Bless their hearts, pray for their enlightenment, and work to stay in your heart so you do not become like them in reaction to them. Counter their hate with your love, their anger with your calm, their judgment with your acceptance.
