My son's dog has done something similar. She will just start barking at night and sometimes i think he must be near. She also stares into the dark night like she is seeing something.
We have three other dogs but this one was his.
Doesn't it make you wonder?

Our dog after our 15 year old son passed

We have a small "lap dog" named Molly. She was always Michael's dog, sweet, loving and quiet. Michael played with her, slept with her, was her best friend. Michael died two years ago when he was 15 of leukemia. He was hospitalized for more than a year, very rarely seeing Molly. After Michael passed, Molly has become progressively noisier. She is 5 years old now, but still very playful like a puppy. But more and more she is barking, sometimes for hours at night. She'll leap out of bed and seems to be chasing something or someone to the doorway where she'll stand and bark. We bring her back to bed, but many nights, she will bolt out of bed 20 times in a row. I wish I could say Michael has been playing with her, but I really don't get a sense of Michael being around. Thoughts?

Children and animals are so connected. I have no doubt that she senses and knows when your son pops in to check on everyone or say hello. I hope it brings you some comfort when you see her communicating. I am so very sorry for your loss. Take gentle care, Joanie -

My dog barks at seemingly nothing too! And my cat comes bolting down the stairs as if something is chasing him. I saw a medium and he told me that my Jim teases the cat sometimes! I could accept that because of my cat's strange behavior! It's like he comes running down the stairs looking back.
Michael is 'teasing' your dog! I think animals are closer to the spirit world then we are sometimes.
My thought is absolutely he is teasing her!
