Posted on 07/27/08, 09:35 pm
my son Alister has autism he was diagnosed 4 years ago he is high functioning his eye contact is bad and he flaps a lot these are the only outward signs he shows, but he has lots of phobias and compulsive disorders, lately he has started to ask questions about his autism he wants to know when its going away as he doesn't want to be the weird kid anymore he is ten years old, he is in therapy for his phobias and cod's but even though he is making progress in this he seams to be getting a little depressed and i can;t give him the answer he wants to hear i know he wants me to say when he wont have autism but how am i going to tell him it doesn;t go away that he has it forever! any advice is most welcome.

Be as honest with him, you can be, realizing how much he can understand. Yrs ago, I was told by a professer, that we all have handicapps, there is no on on this earth that does not have one!! That made sense to me, I would tell him that he can succed in the best way he can, doctores are searching for a cure. Your son can talk and express him self. That is great, my daughter is elective mustism. she can talk only when she wants to, sometimes gets confused to what she wants me to understand. Every day works out and she is 33. BEST Wishes for you and your son. -

I agree with Deb. Tell him the truth. Also tell him the more he knows about himself the better it will be. The therapy will help.
Godd luck. ((hugs)) -

Watch movies with him, about people that have autism, a good one would be Rain Man, I could feel his brothers frusteration! lol, there was another one, that was out too, I cannot remember the name of that one, it came out when BEANS and YOU were still in diapers, lol, gotta joke! Beans had to have been 4-5 yrs old, so many of my friends watched the movie, Gosh it was like the movie was about Beans, so many called me that night, every one said the child reminded them of BEANS, I went to bed that night with hope. I am gonna try to find that movie cause I would like BEANS to watch it. Was on tv in 1978 or 79?? Gosh you and BEANS were babies. All kids Aprils age are kids to me, I love children, they are so sweet and inocent, they say it like it is! cute huh?? except when we as mothers are raising them, then many a time not so cute what they do, lol. Ahh memories, thanks again Fern, lotz of hugs -
