Describe Gastric Sleeve

Posted on 12/23/08, 01:14 am
How does it differ from Roux en y and how is it diff. from lapband? I am still trying to get ready and I have time to change mind. Hubby had R n y but I heard that Gastric Sleeve (GSl) is safer and just as good whereas the lapband is not as effective but also safer.
Thanks, Joy

    Hi Joy,

Gastric Sleeve has a slightly higher effectiveness rate than Lap-Band as far as the percentage of weight loss over 2 years. Unlike RNY, they cut your stomach vertically and physically remove approx 60% of it. This makes your stomach into the shape of a "sleeve", hence the name. The healing time is different than both, since you aren't bypassed, but you have your stomach stitched up. It creates the pouch effect more permanently.

I've been going back and forth as well. The main difference that I'm thinking about is that lap-band is more of a tool, that can be adjusted with your life over time. With GSI, its permanent, and your stomach may stretch and grow like RNY patients sometimes experience, if it isn't treated properly. However, there aren't many food restrictions since you don't have to worry about dumping (RNY) or food getting caught or sitting atop your pouch (LB).

    Good luck!

Welcome

I haven't seen a group for Gastric Sleeve. Its newer, but I know some members have had it, and I could definitely use the support - we all can!
