Surveys, what to do, and what to avoid

We have all seen them, the ads that offer anywhere from a dollar to a hundred dollars or more to take surveys. Are they real? Can you actually make money? Yes, and no.
First, lets weed out the offers that sound too good to be true. Those massive payoffs for one survey are not neccessarily bogus, but they cost you to participate. They usually involve signing up for offers where you agree to try a product or service, at your expense, and then you get a rebate, of sorts, from the survey company. This is ok, if you are actually in the market for any of the products or services. (i.e Blockbuster or Netflix, both good values). Supplement, credit score reports, insurance quotes, signing up for these can mean the need to agree to monthly shipments of product, or having your cell phone blow up with calls from telemarketers. If you are like me, and use a prepaid cell phone, this can be a problem. An expensive one.
Straight up surveys for pay can net you some pocket change, or better, and are actually a good place to start making a little money wihen you have none. I have gotten paid by some of them. There are ways to maximize what you will get back, or to see if you will make fairly decent money.
Demographics has a lot to do with what you will make. If you are a non-Caucasian, with children, you will make more. Why? Because you are in a market which does not get consulted or studies as much in research and development.. Your buying habits, your health issues and concerns, and your political opinions can net you a decent income. Anyone with children will get more surveys. You buy more goods, in a wider range of categories, as a rule, than someone like myself, a middle aged, single white female. Men will find they get extra invitations to participate, as again, they don't get consulted as much.
Another method for making extra money with surveys is to refer your friends. Similar to multi-level marketing, building a downline of referrals can help you make more money.
I would like to see this group help each other by working out a referral system for those of us who want to, or are doing surveys. There are literally hundreds of groups out there that will honestly pay for your opinion. I know of about a dozen right now. Let me know what you think. Are you willing to be a referral for another group member here? Do you have family or friends who would sign up to help you?
Surveys can be a good way to generate some money to parlay into other projects, which is how I plan to work my way out of my poverty. All I have to invest right now is time, and I need to make it work for me.

I tried doing surveys, all I ever got was my email inbox gridlocked with a lot of new spam. A lot of the surveys they said I didnt qualify or wanted me to sign up for or buy something I didnt want. -

I dont mean to be a sourpuss, but I'm a 52 y.o. disabled man who's been looking for a way to make money at home for years.
I've sold just about everything in the house that I didnt want anymore on eBay. I used to fix up motorcycles & resell them, theyre getting hard to find reasonable & the parts are getting very expensive & hard to find anymore, especially on the older bikes.
It seems like every online work-at-home program I come across is a scam or want money from you.

Hi Misha! We are in a similar boat, except for gender. How are your writing skills? From your post, you seem very intelligent. There are some write for pay sites I just learned about a couple days ago, and haven't had a chance to check out yet, thanks to having to get my red blood cells topped off yesterday. Nothing I hate worse than having to lay in a bed all day doing nothing.
I hope to check most of these out tonight and tomorrow, and will pass on any that look good.
I know what you mean about the surveys. They do offer a decent chunk of mad money, if the demographics are right. I recently cashed a check from SurveySpot, and then the paying surveys there seemed to dry up. I am about halfway to being able to get my first cash out with another ocmpany, and I have only been active with them for about a week, so it all depends. -
