Does Anyone Suffer From Spasms in Their Ribcage?

Posted on 03/25/09, 08:57 pm
I am wondering why I also suffer from spasms in my ribcage along with the burning and shooting pain down my spine. Does anyone else suffer from spasms in the ribcage? What do you do to relieve them?

I occasionally get spasms in my back in the area of my ribs. Big muscles there. I take a Soma at the first sign otherwise it gets worse and I'll end up in bed for days. I've tried heat, hot water, massage and dancing under the moon and find Soma more effective and fast relief. I would try acupuncture if I could afford it.

I get muscle spasms in just about every muscle that's in my body, on a daily basis. I used to take the homeopathic Quinine pills from the health food store. They dissolve under your tongue in a few seconds. It seemed to work sometimes, to make the spasm go away. My doc said that the homeopathic pill doesn't have enough Quinine in it to be effective. He suggested that I go to the super market and buy Tonic Water, which has Quinine in it. I have a 2 liter bottle in my fridge at all times now, I buy the store brand for under a buck. When I get a spasm, charlie horse or muscle twitches, I guzzle down about 1/4 of the bottle as quick as I can. I can't say that it will work for everyone but, for me, it works within a minute or two. Nothing else works for me and I'll never, ever be without Tonic Water again. It tastes horrible and at first, I almost gave up on it because I couldn't stand the flavor or the aftertaste. I'm getting used to it, well as much as possible, because it really, really works. And yes, I get muscle spasms in my back and my sides in the rib area. I tried a Soma once and never again, I call it Soma Coma, LOL!!

My wife gets spasms in her rib area, but also gets them in other places at times. She calls it the "twists" since she gets twisted around when the spasm strikes, which is often without any warnings. Afterwards her muscles become very sore and cause more pain. Soma seems to help somewhat but they also make her groggy sometimes. Flexiril (sp?) didn't seem to help much, but caused a lot more sedation. The spasms seem to come in periodic episodes...she can go months without them, but then get them on/off for a month or so. It sometimes seems to be stress related, but so does her Fibro pain, so I guess there is nothing definite. Quinine didn't help much, and she doesn't get spasms where most folks seem to get them (calf, hamstring) but does get them in her torso area mostly. A heating pad, Soma, and Vicodin seem to be the most effective treatment, but nothing seems to really stop it if it decides to act up.

Welcome
