Every minute there are two more deaths by suicide worldwide. Today 2,880 people will die a preventable and premature death. But today, World Suicide Prevention Day, the world comes together to focus their attention on suicide and the unacceptable burden and costs of suicidal behaviors.
According to the International Association for Suicide Prevention, "In many developed countries suicide can be either the 2nd or 3rd leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults and is the 13th leading cause of death worldwide for people of all ages. In addition to those who die by suicide, many millions make non-fatal suicide attempts in the context of emotional distress and suffering for the people involved and their families."
Despite being a campaign to increase American funding for mental health research, everyminute.org has received attention from 58 countries including China, Morocco, and Iran. Suicide is a worldwide problem, and millions around the world have a vested interest in American research. Accelerating America's mental health research will have worldwide implications. Better treatments, preventions and cures won't just affect 57 million American lives, but hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide. (Estimates made by WHO in 2002 showed that 154 million people globally suffer from depression and 25 million people from schizophrenia.)
"While 74 percent of Americans say the United States is a global leader in medical research, they would like to see spending on the medical research increased," according to a study conducted by Research!America. America has the scientific infrastructure necessary to set ambitious goals of finding cures and preventive interventions. And if the world urges Americans to encourage federal funding, America will continue to be a leader in research providing hope and answers to the rest of the world.
The theme for this year is "Think Globally. Plan Nationally. Act Locally." Your efforts to promote understanding and prevention of suicide in your local community today will provide better treatment and hope for the world tomorrow.
