When do you need to get them checked out?

Sensitive teeth could be due to several causes including cavities or cracks in your teeth and trauma. I had cold and hot sensitivity near a tooth and it turned out to be a loose filling. I would have a dentist take a look at them to make sure it's not something that should be fixed.

Thanks, could sensitive teeth be caused by chewing ice?

Chewing ice can cause teeth to crack which will cause sensitivity. If you have old silver filling that are braking down and chewing ice yes this can cause sensitivity. Are you teeth hot and cold sensitive or just one or the other?

Has a dentist ever mentioned to you that you have receding gums or cracks in your teeth (usually on the molars)? If it is just your gums you can try the tooth paste for sensitive teeth. Sensidyne works the best. It will take 6-8 works to start working. If it is cracks there are a number of different things your dentist can do. The problem w/ cracks in the teeth is sometimes you can't see them and they doen't show up on x-rays. If it is cracks I recomend a dentist who is very concervative

Sensitive teeth can be due to many reasons.
    Some examples:
    cracked tooth/teeth
    filling loose
    cracked filling/s
Not enough enamle remaining on teeth. One way this can happen is from eating a lot of lemons or limes.
I have a sister who loved eating fresh lemons daily.

A nerve infection and therefore needing a root canal.
    cavaties.

clenching or grinding your teeth during your sleeping hours.
