Composit filling (White filling) for many reasons. The post important is because you remove less tooth structure when going with a composit filling. When you get any of the metal filling they are mechanicly locked in, with composite filling they are bonded directly to the tooth. I am not a fan of any of the metal filling. -

white fillings for the reason Camhei said and if not then Gold fillings because the gold mix fillings will expand and contract for you witht he change of temp in your mouth, such as with hot or cold foods.
The amalgam has a lot of talk about them doing harm to the body. I don't know what is true.

There is so much information supporting and against silver fillings because they contain mercury in them. Though there is no conclusive evidence. The main differences have to deal with durability. Silver amalagram fillings last the longest. -

I don't have the white filling to build up my teeth.
I think that the white stuff is a must when a dentist creates 3 steps just like stairs on each tooth. after he build up thin inside and outside of each tooth, then he creates the stairs as part of the process.
Then a temp. full cap/crown.
Later, I get the permanent cap/crown. He uses a gold mix. He said it is the best and that full gold is not the best way to go and it costs more. He uses the gold mix and then the porcelin over it.
I have 8 teeth on the front bottom and they are okay with the exception of needing perio treetment and whitening to match my new teeth.
I uploaded 3 pics that look simular to what mine were before all of this dental work. My teeth were in much worse condition. I did not have a recession to the point of exposing the root so that their appears to be a hole. These are pics off of a website. They are not my teeth. -

I feel the most comfortable with the composite (white) fillings because they contain no merc. They also look the best. Metal fillings are sometimes temperature sensitive and look odd. 6183dave needs to look up some information about amalgam fillings on the ada website. The ada has now come out and said that amalgam fillings that contain merc release toxins into the bloodstream by leaching and by chewing. -

Its a known fact that amalgam fillings have mercury in them the only thing they ("the dental association") have no conclusive evidence about is if mercury is actually harmful, but is that really a question really even have to ask yourself? The white ones are the most expensive and thats why many dentists advise against them they make more money off of you when you get a metal filling but the white ones are the best. One out of 10 people will be allergic to the material in their dental fillings if they contain metal. When people think of an allergic reaction they instantly think of a rash or irritation but not in the case of metal sensitivity your allergic reaction can manifest as fatigue, sinus issues or even mood swings.
