Ice Cream for my Pops

Posted on 08/04/09, 09:47 pm
I just thought I would share a little something to hopefully make you all smile.

My Dad who I have watched over for years suffers from Parkinson's and Dementia, but still is a fierce fighter for all underdogs and those in need. In his foggiest days, he still wants to share the treats I bring him and is constantly buying ice cream (his favorite food) for the whole nursing home he lives at. I love this about him along with so many other things.

Anyway...we used to raise money for all sorts of organizations and he taught us the importance of volunteering early in life. One event I help organize each summer is a concert event to help the Youth Symphony Orchestra in our area which has become a pretty big event of this kind. We have about 3,000 people attend now and raise enough to help them through the year.

This year we added a benefactor to this event that provides support to families that can't pay their heating bills in the winter. All of you that have listened to me rag about the cold here know how important this is.

Well...Shoeps Ice Cream has joined in the event and is providing proceeds of ice cream sales to be donated totally to this fund. Once they were on board, a popcorn, soda and food vendor joined in. They are making a special ice cream as one of the flavors for the event and let me pick it out and name it. Soooo...I let my Dad select it and they are naming it after him. I'm so touched and he's in hog heaven with the idea that after years of buying ice cream they are naming one after him!

The event is tomorrow night and even before the sales start, we have collected $10,000 for the Youth Orchestra and almost $20,000 for the Warm Fund. Woooo Hoooooo!!!!

I'm going to sit on the roof of one my buildings and film it for my Dad.

While there's plenty of crap in this world right now, tomorrow will be a good day in my heart.

If you lived closer I would invite you all and you bet my Dad would treat to the ice cream!

Mother Nature, my arch enemy took a day off of battling me and it was a beautiful day. We had over 5,000 people and raised enough money to fund the youth orchestra for another year and the ice cream sales were unbelievable, still waiting for final sales count. The music was great, people were happy and it just made me feel like a human again.

I'm taking a video I made of it out to show my Dad this weekend. He'll be so proud to hear the speech made thanking him for inspiration and help in his community for so many years. I wish he could have been there, but in my heart I know he was. Now I'm just hoping for a good day for him so he can soak this up a bit.

Thanks for letting me share a little positive vibe, with so much to battle against these days it just felt so good to have a day of happy people to lose myself in.

And....the best part was my Dad's favorite flavor sold out first. It's really the little things some days!

Oh! What an inspiration!! It's so wonderful to read some good news for a change. It doesn't take much to bless a giving person like you and your dad, but I think what you guys do to help others is not a "little" thing. I think it is TREMENDOUS!!

Cathy, you are amazing! I am sure your Dad is proud of you, as you should be as well. What flavor ice cream is your Dad's favorite?? What an awesome accomplishment you make and continue to make each and every day. We should all take a lesson here.... when we give of ourselves it benefits sooooo many people. Good for you!
