Biogenic amines in lacto-fermented foods

Posted on 05/29/12, 08:32 am
Just wondering if anyone knows about this. I've been suffering the most horrific increase in classic migraine with aura since introducing fermented foods into my diet. Today I had two, one at lunch time and one this evening - I feel like I've been lobotomised! I've done an elimination diet before, which found I was sensitive to glutamate and amines, and also various "numbers". The weekly migraines disappeared... until now. Right now my diet is super fresh and healthy, and has been for some time. I eat a spelt sourdough most days, as well as sauerkraut, and now I'm starting to wonder if it's the tyramine in these foods triggering my migraines. Is there any way to make lacto-fermented foods that do not contain biogenic amines? Any insights would be very helpful! Kam x

I don't have the problems you write about with the Tyramines in foods. I do eat some fermented foods but I also balance out and will drink the raw, organic cow milk than just entirely fermented kefir. I do eat sauerkraut, but keep the amounts small. Many things I keep in small quantities because of the cost and can't afford to do more.

Maybe in your case, just cut out the fermented for right now and then reintroduce after a few weeks and keep to much, much smaller scale?

{{{hugs}}} to you and hope your migraines go away.

Thank-you mmztcass, very sweet of you to reply. I am doing a "reverse" elimination diet at present, so will slowly reintroduce as you say. I've also done a blood typing thingy in the past, which also said I should stay away from fermented foods, but I can't remember why. Also it may have meant pickled with vinegar etc...

Will keep plugging away at it :-)

Just bumping this again, as I still do a lot of work with diet, but cannot seem to tolerate fermented foods - they give me migraines! Could it be something else I am lacking? Hope someone can help... :-)

Maybe you could post the question to naturalmommie and see what she says? You could find them on fb or the book and find their email address to email to them directly if she doesn't respond through here.
