"A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN" by betty smith

this book is a classic, about a young girl growing up in brooklyn, new york at the early 1900's (1902-1919).  it reminds me of james joyce because it is so descriptive of the area, what the tween sees, the names of the streets, what the people do for a living.  what her routine of life is.  you are right there with her.

the new york times lists it as moving and honest and true.

what did old new york really look like?  what did people do for a living?  what did children do?  did they work at home?  did they play?
