Scotland and Ireland

I am very interested in these two places and was wondering if anyone knows of a good series of books or a great author that makes these two countries come alive. Romance, history, anything, it doesn't matter. I want to immerse myself in their culture, customs, and such before my daughter and I travel there for her graduation.
