Can't swallow my pills, what to do?
Posted on 10/21/09, 10:28 pm
I want to take my pills, really I do but sometimes I vomit as soon as they touch my tongue. It doesn't matter the size either because my p-doc has tried to give me smaller pills but I just have to take more to get the correct dosage. Any ideas? Thanks!! Liza

Hmmm....I actually have a harder time with the small ones. Lamictal and Seroquel are tiny and Istruggle with them. Depakote was easier to swallow even though it was bigger. What I do is take a couple of big gulps of water, (as big as I can...prime the pump so to speak) then pop the pills in (or one at a time) and keep gulping till they go down. Try leaning your head back. You trick yourself into thinking your gulping water instead of pills. And after you swallow them keep gulping. You'll get used to it. If not, I know there are some medications that come in a melt in your mouth form or a sprinkle form. Hope this helps. I struggled with swallowing all the pills at first too but you get used to it. -

Oh, and try not to let them touch your tongue, have water in your mouth first cause some of them taste NASTY! -

Yeah, I always get a big gulp of my drink and then tilt my head back to drop the pills in. That way they sort of float and it's less likely to stick to your tongue. I still think they should all have a coating like advil. -

Those are all good approaches, but in case you'd like another I've sometimes taken my pills with food. I mean like a bite of food with a single pill, thus tricking my mouth into thinking it's just food - and I have no problem with eating food. :-)
