Bipolar Mom & ADHD Son.....

Posted on 01/31/09, 01:24 pm
Ever since I gave birth all the percieved ideas I have on my mothering went out the door. The Bipolar switch seemed to be turned on after his birth. As he grew into a toddler... he became more angry and fought me tooth & nail.He is 10 now. 2.5 yrs ago, he was dx'd w/ ADHD and put on focalin 15mg. It seems to help some. But I was dx'd BP 2007. I am struggling with my illness as well. I struggle everyday to be a loving productive mom. Not easy for me with a wall around me.
Okay, enough rambling. Can anyone relate to this?? I would love to hear how you handle you situation.Thanks.

Wow, the same thing happened to me (the bipolar switch after his birth). Very odd. We've had my son in and out of our local children's hospital trying to find out what is going on with his mind. I wonder how long it will take the docs. He is very young so a definite answer might need to wait until he ages. They are trying to rule out PDD-NOS and are going w/ ADHD...I disagree. I think he is more like me. Just as my daughter is. Poor kids. I definitely know what you mean about struggling. For example, I tried to explain to my daughter that the docs are going to try to help make my mind work better so I can be a better mommy and she said "But you are already a good mommy." So then I felt like,oh crap, am I just screwing her up more by telling her all of this is she doesn't even think anything is wrong with me to begin with? And, that wall you speak of? Honey, I can relate all to well. Are you on meds? If so, do you feel they have helped with the wall? Oh, I hope so. Let's talk, I'd like to discuss your post further b/c it is the story of my life!!! Thanks so much for putting it on here-I could talk for hours and hours about it...literally...but, I've got to catch some shut eye now so write back :) (If you'd rather, go ahead and message me-it's up to you.)
