phobic of being out of comfort zone away from home?

Posted on 04/29/09, 10:32 am
hi everyone. i have had anixety and panic attacks and now depression for 51/2 years now. it started when i was on holiday abroad, i was very stressed had a break down and had to come home on a early flight on tranquilizers !! since that day i have struggled to go to far from home. i have been on short mini breaks over the last 5 odd years and almost every time i work my self into a frenzie and have to go home. i fear i have panic and a phobia of being away from home. i can go to the shops but anything that requires me to stay over night i get into such a state it brings on major panic attacks. has anyone else got this type of phobia????

    Hi Lilly
    Welcome to the Group.
It sounds as though your Panic was born
of the most common type the " Out of the Blue " Panic.
I can go places now away from home to stay
the night BUT, can not go into a local shop well.
It seems if I go farther ( a bit ) away from home then
I won't have to deal with people thinking I am crazy IF something does happen
    This is Social Phobia
Your Anticipatory Anxiety is what works you into the frenzy
and then all other symptoms follow.
Have you had any type of Counseling?
Maybe check into CBT ( Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ) as
that works on changing our thinking habits..Yes, I said HABITS
as that is what we acquire from our Negative Thinking is a Habit to always think that way.
Breathing is VERY important. Set aside 1-2 hours a day to just RELAX and Breath.
Make a Sanctuary in your mind where you feel safe and go there
for that 1-2 hrs a day.
There is MUCH help with Guided Imagery also.

    Hi Lilly

I am exactly the same as you, although going to local shops is also a nightmare for me, I prefer to go just out of town, then I hope not to meet anyone.

The thought of going more than a couple hour from my home panics me, so I have adjusted my holidays to short breaks at a friends cabin in the country, just 70 miles from us .... about one and a half hours drive.
I still find this hard to do, with packing etc. and seem to flop when I get home. I think it just takes so much out of me to go away from home, but I do it for my family.

I booked a holiday in Tenerife 2 years ago (I was on a good day) and had to cancel it after a month of booking. Because I never told them I have anxiety problems, I didnt persue the insurance cover and lost my deposit and insurance totalling £463 .... I was so relieved I wasnt caring about the money!!!

I havent had time to look at Ravins advice, but I am here for you anytime, just contact me.

    Hugs Angel xx
