Christmas is way too commercial. I combat it by stressing the Birthday angle. The Nativity Scene & Advent Wreath are our main decorations. (DH won't let us have a tree anyway.)
Prior to my current marriage, there was always a birthday cake & singing on Xmas. The "greedy gimmies" were nipped in the bud (somewhat) with the question "What are you getting Jesus? It's His birthday after all."
Remember:
Halloween is about candy.
Thanksgiving is about pie.
Christmas is about cookies.
New Year's Eve is about eggnog.
The New Year is about losing all the weight we've gained since October. 8-)

Each holiday season we are bombarded with imgery regarding what the holidays should LOOK and BE like. In particular what our childen should expect to receive. I have two little boys who just think they are getting the world under their Christmas tree. I try to warn em' , "now boys, nobody gets everything they want for Christmas"< and> "Christmas is not just about presents kids, it's Jesus' birthday that we are actually celebrating".
But honestly, isn't it rough to compete with television ads these days? Or is it just me that things have gotten ridiculously over priced for children? Event he price of young children and family board games has skyrocketed. Kinda makes it tough on the average family.
Sorry I went on a rant, but I wonder how many of you feel much the same as I do?

I remeber when it was just me and my oldest I bought him stuff all the time and when it came to christmas and his birthday he was never apperciative. So I minumized the things I bought him thrugh out the year. So eventually he got better about present accepting. Then when the rest of the kids came. I have tried to always even things out things they need something they want and items they are interested in like my daughters like crafty necklase making kits and drawing and things like that. My kids are always happy with what they get . Except for a year now my one twin has told me several time that almost all the girls in her class got aa 250$ butterscotch horse. I told her to much money she still to this day mumbles when the commercial comes on LOL
