Are seizures common side effects of a TBI?

They can be. Post injury Scar tissue can form on the brain tissue as the brain heals. This is known to interrupt the electrical activity in the brain and can cause seizures. An individual with a TBI who has a seizure disorder is understood to have post-traumatic epilepsy.

There are many different types of seizures from the most common type – Grand Mal seizures that typically last 2-5 minutes to Complex Partial seizures lasting a few minutes to an Absence seizure that last only a few seconds. Behaviors vary depending upon which type and may include loss of consciousness and shaking of body parts – other types may not include this but eyelid fluttering, gaps in talking and/or lip smacking.

An individual with a TBI may be more prone to a seizure as a result of the following:

-Fatigue
-Alcohols and Drug use
-Stress and anxiety
-Sickness including fevers/colds
-Poor nutrition
-Low blood sugar
