Affirmations on DailyStrength?
Posted in Alcoholism by Paul Asplund on Apr 29, 2009

For the past few months, I have been receiving a list of daily affirmations from the Daily Positive Thoughts member group.

I love affirmations, and repeat one every morning (and somethimes throughout the day, as needed) that I created years ago.

They're "good medicine" and I'm thinking about doing more affirmations on DailyStrength.

I want to know what you use as affirmations, whether they're ones you created for yourselves, or maybe from a favorite website, book, etc.

I look forward to hearing from all of you!

Best,

Paul

p.s. my daily affirmation? I am happy, healthy, loving, and loved

One of many is a prayer from St. Francis de Sales, which has been so useful for me at this time:

"HAVE COURAGE

Do not look forward to what might happen tomorrow;
the same Everlasting Father who cares for you today
will take care of you tomorrow and every day.
Either He will shield you from suffering or
He will give you unfailing strength to bear it.
Be at peace, then, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations."

Keep Calm and Carry On.

Your courage, your cheerfulness, your resolution will bring us victory.

I think these were both WW2 posters in Britain.

Someone told me once: What you think about, comes about. Even the Bible says "focus on all things lovely, pure, ....My dad used to say "nothing stays the same". So when we feel really depressed about our symptoms, remember, they will not stay the same. Also, it helps me to think of others worse off. I may FEEL like I have Multiple Sclerosis, or lupus (wish I could get rid of the pain, then I would go running), but there are people that HAVE THESE DIAGNOSIS, AND WITH ms IT JUST GETS WORSE, SO THEY DO NOT HAVE HOPE. We have hope, because truly many doctors dont even know what to expect with us... My dilemma is I react to so many meds that I have little hope in that aspect. Cymbalta, and lyrica do not work at all,and cause horrible side effects...I wish those would work.. Raindrop512

Paul, lately my only daily affirmation when I am stressed out or worried is a song that I take with me everywhere I go called "The Three Little Bird". It helps me to have hope that everything is going to be alright.

The ghosts of my past can no longer haunt me.

I am who I choose to become, not what has happened to me.

"I think I can. I think I can. I think I can." -Watty Piper: "The Little Engine That Could" (1930)

I'm good enough, smart enough, and dog-gone-it, people like me!

A few of my favorites are :

'This above all to thine own self be true' - Shakespeare
'When you hit rock bottom there is no where to go but up' - My Mother
'That which you manifest is before you' - Garth Stien/some Indy100 racer
'Trust and Believe' - My Mentor

These are all affirmations I use on a daily basis. They have all worked for me, and I hope that they will work for someone else too. =]

I agree with Paul and the used of positive affirmation and visualization. I think the best ones are the ones you make yourself for they are truly yours.

Years ago I attended a class called positive Mental Attitude, as a treatment for chronic depression. Affirmations was one tool we were given.

The best affirmation I have ever had was simple and succinct: This Too Shall Pass. And its sister affirmation: The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on, nor can any of your tears wash out a single line. Or in my Grannys words: Done is Done. It is no use brooding over the past -- learn from it and leave it on the ground where it lies.

I carry a list of affirmations in my purse, truck glove box, nightstand, at my computer, and stored in my ipod...when fibro fog gets thick, I read one aloud..then lie down, do deep breathing and repeat the affirmation..
Belleruth Naparstek has a cd "A Meditation To Help With Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue." (affirmations that I love)

I love many affirmations and quotes, and many from Mahatma Ghandi. One that often I relate to is:
"BE THE CHANGE THAT WISH YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD".

I do feel, it's a great empowerment & enjoyment; in the sharing and learning while doing that.
