Affirmations! Affirmations! Affirmations!

I am a big believer in affirmations.  I find them especially effective in my private practice when working with clients on changing negative thoughts and beliefs. But changing engrained beliefs and accepting new ones is not easy and requires a lot of practice and patience.

I am constantly looking for ways to make this process easier and recently I was reminded of something I conceptualize as - the power of three. Have you ever heard that in order to have something really sink in you have to say it three times?  I don't have the scientific facts to prove this theory but it still sounds intriguing.

I first began thinking about this last year while attending a Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) service.  It is tradition to ask forgiveness from those throughout the year that you may have hurt.  You are supposed to ask each person three times as it takes three times for someone to really take the information in and process it.  The first time you ask they hear the words but not the meaning.  The second time you ask they understand the meaning but not the emotions.  And the third time you ask they can incorporate the words with meaning and emotion.

I found a lot of similarities between this custom and accepting affirmations.  In a sense, aren't we asking ourselves for forgiveness when extinguishing negative core beliefs that are often wrought with shame and guilt.  Now this is not to imply that those who hold negative beliefs have done something to feel guilty or shameful about.  It's usually more of a self-perception than a reality and in cognitive work those thoughts and beliefs are called "irrational thoughts."

Although this one exercise cannot remove all engrained negative thoughts and assimilate all new affirmations I thought it might bring some of you a bit of relief to go ahead and leave your personal affirmation in the comment section-three times.

For those of you who are unclear about what exactly an affirmation is, it is a short positive message that you say to yourself in hopes of countering negative self-statements and providing motivation or inspiration.  Although I didn't use the word "affirmation," I wrote a blog awhile back which explains the concept called "I am Lovable and Capable."

Again if you feel inclined please use the comment section to leave your affirmation three times.  Take as much space as you need and if you find other people's affirmation resonating with you, I'm sure no one will mind if you borrow it as often we are struggling with similar issues.  I will start:  I am lovable and capable, I am lovable and capable, I am lovable and capable...

When doing affirmations for myself I have found that just after I say one I get a little jerk of feeling which is my body's way of refusing the affirmation. I have started saying "Yes it is" or "yes I do" after I get this feeling to reinforce the affirmation. Also using NLP and parts I get the part that is having difficulty with the affirmation to repeat the affirmation inside me and listen to the "voice" it uses. Often the voice is weak and not empowering so I make it strong and empowering and get the part to repeat it this way.

My affirmation of the day:

I am healthy, whole and complete
I am healthy, whole and complete
I am healthy, whole and complete

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
