FAST FACTS
Things that weird me out and shouldn't...because I'm a Doctor
Posted in Accidents by Dr. Sharon Orrange on Jan 31, 2009

During my years in the ICU, emergency rooms and in clinics I have been bathed in blood, vomit, urine, respiratory secretions, stool, and every fluid you can think of. I have removed toenails, drained abscesses in all locations and never once felt "grossed out." In my regular life, however, there are times I am grossed out. People always say to me: "you're a doctor, how can that weird you out?". It must be something about being in my regular life or is it just that there are SOME things that gross me out, despite the fact that I have literally seen it all.

1) Sweat dripping on me (usually from a man) during an exercise class (spinning, gym, etc). Gross.

2) Picking up warm dog poop with a plastic bag, and then carrying it around looking for a trashcan.

3) Drinking the milk from the cereal bowl after you've eaten the cereal.

4) Picking up worms, salamanders, or lizards. My daughter can do this with ease, not me.

5) Patients with very, very, very sore, red, inflamed, exudative (usually strep or mono) sore throats. This is one of the ONLY things that make me weak in the knees...strange huh.

6) People putting eye drops or ear drops in at restaurants. I don't know why but that's a little gross.

7) Clipping your toenails and letting the pieces fly across the room. My husband does this.

8) Bringing a newspaper in with you to the bathroom to take a bowel movement, then bringing the newspaper back out and putting it in the "common areas."

9) Putting socks then shoes on your feet when they are wet and sandy.

10) People gnawing on really, really short fingernails.

What are yours?

Leaving the bathroom open or having to listen to people doing their " business."
People talking with their mouths full and sounding like hogs at a trough.
People picking their nose while cooking, more common than you think. Ugh and barf!

you say that you can identify a "high maintenance" patient if they come in carrying a H20 bottle??? C'mon are you serious??? Please explain this conncection since I can no longer access your article from this site...Maybe there are good reasons why people "shop" around for an MD they feel comfortable with.....just maybe....there are plenty of "deficits" in clinical medicine, personally i will search & go anywhere to get the BEST practitioner I can find for my condition . High maintenance?. tyetoozi@yahoo.com

Can I say that made me feel so much better. For years I've had heated discussions with family members about what is acceptably gross. I always felt it was a very individual thing but I've been told I'm unsympathetic for not wanting to look on surgical scars, wounds, and that I like to close the bathroom door!

I leave my dogs poop where ever he does his business, no way I'm touching that. I'll pay a fine first.

People touching their feet then touching me or things around me.
Discolored finger/toe nails.
Wound packing being pulled out of a gaping hole in someone's body.
The smell of vomit. The sight and sound not so bad, but the smell makes me want to puke!
Not washing my hands after being in public, you have NO idea what you're touching.
Excessively large tumors or growths.
The sucking sound of a passage being cleared.

oh boy. before i was 14, anything medical would have grossed me out.. but since then i have had countless surgeries, crazy tests, gross fluids leaving my body, plenty of stool sample surfing.. and i have doctors appts once a week. so now.. the things that really get me nauseated are:
1. Lactulose, when it comes back out and smells JUST like the food you ate 15 minutes ago.
2. taking huge white pills.. something about them just makes me want to gag before even putting it in my mouth.
3. anything i have to drink that tastes bad. (barium, contrast, alcohol included)
4. cleaning up anything my cats have left behind. vomit. poop. pee. hairballs. thank god for my mom.
5. spiders. i will leave my house and wait for someone else to get them.
6. the sound of your roommate coughing/sneezing/gurgling/pooping when you are admitted into the hospital. its even worse when you are in there for extended periods of time and have a few different roommates, thus, hearing all different sounds.

greeahhhh this is grossing me out just thinking of it! lol good post though!

The things that gross me out are:
1) When people eat only half of something and then put it back on a serving tray.
2) When people use a public rest room and don't flush.
3) When people pick their teeth or nose in public.
4) People scratching themselves in public, (it makes me suspicious of why they are scratching in the first place) and then offering you their hand to shake.
5) It grosses me out when people just don't brush their teeth regularly and smile at you. Especially if you can tell what they have been eating when they smile.
6) I can't stand the sight of blood. Especially when it is my own.
7) Fish flies totally gross me out. Both their appearance and scent.

Long drops! - that's a hole in the ground, over which is a portable seat and walls - when the "hole" fills up, the superstructure can be moved onto another "fresh" hole. Doubt that you'd see such in most places in the US - but they do still happen - no water supply being the main problem. I have the feeling these will be making a comeback - I hope not the very worst, which have huntsman spiders (harmless, just hairy), and rabbit skins drying out in wire frames - gooey! - these are also known as "Dinkum Dunnnies" and are environmentally sound - if they shut tight. The ultimately bad ones are open - and of course, get flyblown. There's no extra smell, but you learn not to look down there! Yuck! JaneD.

Be VERY, VERY glad you are not ME...... You dont want to see blood or have injections.... I go every month for an infusion of Tysabri so there is some blood & at least one needle each time.
Plus next month I will be going in for my 10th surgery (back - this time) so I will have more needles & more blood loss I would imagine..
I am sure you have done these things also.. Just had to respond to that one.
Lots of stuff you guys have thought of grosses me out....... Yikes

1.Someone eating a sandwich and then saying "here, try it" and there is a little string of slobber between them and the sandwich..oh! to think what is on their teeth, and then they want to transfer it to me..no thanks!
2.Guys who chew tobacco and carry around a plastic pop bottle to spit in.
One of my son's friends picked up the wrong can of soda and had a drink, and surprise..chew spit
3. Speaking of spiders, someone stomping on a spider and hearing the crunch
4.Letting children wander between the dips at a potluck and stick their fingers in and used chips or crackers...
5.Using the same cloth wipe to wipe the kid, the counter, the table, the kid again, and then hang it up for the next round
6.The urine smells in a nursing home.
