Glamour Magazine Wants to Interview Women on DailyStrength
Posted in Acne by Dr. Sharon Orrange on Feb 24, 2009

Hey you guys. Liz is a reporter from Glamour who is writing an article on a very timely and interesting topic. Glamour wants to talk to women 18-30 here on DailyStrength about this article and here is the scoop. The story is looking  at the rising number of young women who are taking  prescription pills (adderall, xanax, ambien, for example) and for what reason. What they are interested in is a trend where folks are borrowing friends meds before tests, on plane flights, etc. They want to know if you have a diagnosable condition, and so have a prescription administered by a doctor OR do you borrow or buy them from friends to do better on tests, pull an all nighter, or simply to fall asleep.

Some of the questions they would like to ask our women taking medications are: how many are you taking and for what reason?  What is your attitude about the pills you are taking?  How do they make you feel? Function?  Any bummer side effects?  Are they prescribed? If  not, are you worried about potential problems/risks? Do you keep the fact that you take pills a secret from your friends? If so, why?   I am looking for five women who would be willing to speak with me on the record and be photographed for Glamour magazine about their pill use.  For those who would prefer a pseudonym, I am still interested in hearing and using their stories without a photograph. If you are interested you can reach Liz by email lizmorganwelch@gmail.com.

I also believe that this magazine is exploitive...i just got a copy in the mail for making another purchase for a free subscription...and the only thing it sells is sex, fashion and diet ... they are focusing on what women have been trying to escape from for years..being made to feel like we have to please men, dress for them and be skinny for them as well...I am old enough to have been there and done that..for any woman out there who thinks that they will give their story up for scrutiny and review by strangers, think again...once your info is out there its out there..you can't take it back...if you are concerned about a problem, then get help personally and professionally...there is way too much exploition going on in these "mags" geared to younger women...i am old enough also to know that because someone has a dr in front of their name does not mean they have your best interest at heart...it's all about how many and how much of a name they can make for themselves....trust me on this..

Dearest Ed777,
There is no need to attack Dr. Orrange over this. She has been a lot of help to many here! Just disagree with it and lets not get personal. I to am totally against doing this as you are, as I spoke up in my reply below. I hope you have a wonderful day and are not in severe pain today.
Bright Blessings to you

I believe there is much abuse towards prescription drugs, but I also believe that if this article is on the "up and up", it would benefit many young women struggling. Please consider me. I would love to help!

Orrange can't publish in a peer reviewed journal. She decides instead to publish in Glamour. What a professional! Did this moron flunk out of her residency or what? No medical credibility. What a losser. I have more publications.

Glamour is looking to smear the women who use this site to write a salacious artical. They will paint all of you as a bunch of drug addicts. Good luck getting your presciptions filled after this one hits the presses. Do the right thing and boycott Glamour. Better yet write a letter to them and their competitors explaining why you take your meds responsibly, and why you need them. Please don't hurt those of us who take our meds in a responsible manner by giving an interview to theses vampires at Glamour.

IT IS ME AGAIN!!!! Please suggest an article on the long term effect of physical abuse!!! Please give me an outlet to save the health and lives of women in abusive relationships. PLEASE!!!I am not asking for myself!! It is too late for me. I would just like to think that someone else might avoid this horrible outcome if they knew in advance what to look for!!!

"PLEASE!!!""

Glamour Magazine is not the type of magazine to do a straight up article for something like this at all! Everything will be editing to get ratings only. And anyone that puts their name to anything on this will have problems in the future in some way. The big issue is people that are in severe chronic pain and "do not get the meds they need to function in this country". They are just thrown anti depressants and told to go home! How about an article of the decline of the "finding a well knowledge d doctor anymore? What they are putting through Medical schools are terrible these days. Even my doctors say the same thing! Do not put your names to any articles about you taking narcotics or anti depressants. If your name is quoted, it can hurt your jobs and many you may want to do in your life. That is why there is confidentiality in your records. Glamour magazine you have to be kidding me? They will say anything to get information from anyone to get a story. I would never take the chance to possibly have my words edited out and some one else put words in my mouth in an article that everyone in the country will see and read. This is not something like the JAMA or a Medical trial, or some medical journal?
I agree with catlovedi on #1 here on this post! We are suppose to be a support group not being unveiled for the world to read about!
These kind of magazines are rags! To speak any dirt they can get on anyone at the cost of the person they are writing about. This is just not the right forum for this at all.
Don't even try to change my opinion on this as I am a lot older than the group they want to talk to for a good reason. I have lived to see this kind of thing hurt many people and their lifes!

It sounds to me that Glamour Magazine has already drafted an article with a focus more slanted on perscription drug abuse than use amongst women in this age group and are just looking for five women to fill in the gaps with quotes and put human faces for a sense of reality. Of course, I am jaded having been interviewed by newspaper reporters over the years. The last one was supposed to be focused on my artistic achievement (or so he said when he called) but in print turned out to be an article on my previous employer spun off on what ex-employees are doing now. So anyone contacting Glamour, please be aware that the end result may be quite different than what you may anticipate.

I agree with awareness. And not being so ruthless and negative. I agree the there are others like me who have hit rock bottom because of what seemed to be a harmless prescription. I was desperate to feel better. I believe that sharing your story is a way of support. I would love to talk about my experience.

catlovesdi, the purpose of research is to gain more knowledge of the particular topic. the more knowledge we have and the wider spread it is the more of a chance we have to heal ourselves and help one another. that's support too. no one is going to force you to participate in any research studies, so just settle down! what you may find offensive someone else may find helpful.

Sometimes research can be helpful & sometimes it can be harmful. But going thru DS, IMHO, could be creating a conflict of interest for DS. I've also see people working on their masters, etc., bypass asking DS for permission & just join groups to solicit volunteers to do surveys, etc. I've also read people's journals/posts who are using what they find on DS to write books. Unfortunately this is a public forum, accessible to everyone and whatever is posted here pretty much becomes fodder for anyone who wants to use it.

That aside, it's too bad that Liz has chosen such a narrow age range. Over medicating is a national epidemic and affects people of all ages, including children. Granted, she can write about whatever she wants, but IMHO, the focus of borrowing drugs and "bummer side effects" (???????), taking pills in secret, etc. is a bit shallow and could actually glamorize the problem (pun intended). The public would be better served if she found out just how many millions of people have suffered devastating life changing (or as she puts it, "bummer") side effects. Or how many people have been mis-dx'd and mis-medicated. Or how seniors are over medicated and how the combination of meds cause serious cognitive issues (just to name one). Or how many kids are drugged because the SCHOOLS tell their parents they are ADD or ADHD and pressure the parent to get the kid on drugs so they are more easily managed. Or she might even look into how drugs are tested and WHO actually pays for and does the research. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

To quote Dennis Miller, "Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."

Hello. It sounds to me like this reporter HAS done her homework and HAS found a problem out there and is trying to find a solution by finding out more data on these drugs, uses, reasons for potential dangers and wants to alert more people to it. This should be a good thing and not taken in a negative matter. We should welcome the media openly as many of our causes have little or no public awareness. If someone from the media volunteers for awareness when it comes to drugs and misuse of them...please try to help in any way we can. It is our duty. Jennifer

I am confused. I thought this site was for anonymous SUPPORT! Not a place for people to prowl for information.

I find this offensive when people come to threads asking things like this! What makes it OK for you to come to us asking us?

We are here for support. Not to be used for others research.
