Death Panels and Forced Euthanasia?
Posted in Alcoholism by Dr. Sharon Orrange on Aug 09, 2009

Many of us have seen that the "discussion" surrounding healthcare reform is heated to say the least. As a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at USC we in primary care are waiting to see how this plays out. I believe reform has to happen and that everyone deserves access to affordable healthcare, I also realize this will mean changes for us as Physicians that aren't all good.  Physicians and Patients are frustrated at shorter office visits and we have to figure out how to attract medical students to Primary Care or we aren't going to have anyone to take care of us when we are older.

The most disgusting part of the healthcare reform discussion, however, is now fully underway. I heard Newt Gingrich defending Sarah Palin's remarks about Death panels choosing euthanasia. Newt Gingrinch "reminds us" that a Government run healthcare plan would mean that euthanasia is a likely outcome of Bureaucrats being able to decide who gets healthcare and who doesn't. This, more than any crazy comment I have heard in the last year, infuriates me.  It is such a disgusting idea it's hard for me to legitimize it by responding to it but I realize this idea of "death panels" is catching on with some folks. I'd like to remind folks starting to worry about Death Panels and euthanasia that Medicare is a government run entity and we certainly don't engage in Death Panels with our Medicare patients, and in fact Medicare will cover you and all of your inpatient hospital care no worries. My ICU last week was full of Medicare patients receiving the highest level of care as we should all expect.   I trained at a VA Hospital in La Jolla, also Government run, and we certainly didn't engage in Death Panels or Euthanasia. In fact, I spend quite a bit of time at LA County Medical Center where folks have no coverage at all and receive excellent intensive care. Not only is this a baseless argument but to imply that Physicians would go along with Death Panels and time limits in ICUs, for example, is insulting. This discussion of Death Panels and euthanasia is uneducated, annoying, disgusting and none of us should stand for the dumbing down of this discussion. It's too important.

Dr O.

"Death panels" simply refer to the bureaucrats that will decide whether you will receive the treatments your doctor recommended. Because of budget limitations that have affected ALL government run programs in other nations and ours, people will be judged based upon thier quality of life and expected life spans and not what's best for them. If you live in Canada or the UK and you are 75, good luck getting cutting edge treatment. The result? Suffering and early death. This is all verifiable FACT.

The blind will see that the health care bill is a sham, we wont be able to afford it and forced to have something you cant afford, or be fined. Its not about money , its about control, goverment control. I dont even care any more, how can you be proud of your country when their is so much corruption in the goverment.

I have so much to say regarding this subject, but I cannot seem to fit it all into 1024 characters, so I'll try to sum it up. The death panel hype is produced by those who have much to gain, health care executives at risk for losing some of their millions, lobbyists at risk of losing their jobs, republicans at risk of losing their seniority for another 2 years, and a woman who lost the vice presidential race, has no current position in the government (at any level), and who is at risk of losing her 10 minutes of fame. Our health care system currently has death panels, we just don't call it what it is...i.e. the woman who was left to die from cancer because she forgot to mention she was treated for acne as a teen or those who are left to suffer because health care is unaffordable or released from hospitals too soon because they don't have health insurance. People, get smart, do your own research, don't blindly follow the ignorant.

Ignorance has no pride. I feel very sad that there are so many people running around shooting their mouths off, proud of their ignorance. I just moved to a new state and I am appalled at this discovery. Makes me happy to be from where I am from. "There is one thing more that will keep a man in everlasting ignorance and that is: Contempt Prior to Investigation." Get educated, folks. This is a complicated problem and it's probably going to have a complicated answer. Relax, everyone is going to have to give, and we all need each other.

Read the bill - the people who will be "counseling" people regarding end of life decisions will not be physicians... they will be bureaucrats.

Older individuals will not receive urgent care as rapidly as younger.

If you chose to have private insurance you wills till have to contribute to the government insurance.

Again - step out of the political arena.....

Dr.Orrange,

You misquoted Sarah Palin. She didn't refer to euthanasia but to bureaucrats denying health care based on a persons "worth": "The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s ‘death panel’ so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their ‘level of productivity in society,’ whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil,”

Of course there will be no panel named "death panel". They will have non-offensive names. There will be panels and entities deciding who will get what care and they will have to consider the costs because our resources are completely depleted. All of these additional costs are going to incur debt so they WILL be rationed.

You seem convinced that rationing based upon worth or life expectancy won't happen here even though it happens in EVERY nation with government run health. Have you studied the other nation's programs, rationing, and results? Have you noticed that many of those countries are moving back towards privatised medicine? You really should.

The death panel debate is like the illegal immigrant debate. No, the bill doesn't SAY the illegals will be covered, in fact, it says they won't, but there is NO REQUIREMENT for proof of identification or citizenship so it's a "pretend" rule. Saying there are no death panels in the bill is like saying there will be no cost limits or decisions made by anyone but you.

cyberscryber said: "So you can thank your employers for paying for half of your social security and medicare--and guess what? They don't get to use your SS benefits or medicare, of which they paid half."

First of all I don't use SS or medicare. As for "my employer" not getting to use my SS benefits....SO WHAT? First of all, I am self employeed. Second of all I pay a LOT of taxes I don't "benefit" from. I have never received ANY public money of any kind, yet, I pay for these programs and I KNOW they are neccesary. I did NOT approve of ANY of the wars of the last 65 years, yet my taxes were used for them, and NONE of the wars since WWII did a damn thing to help me. I pay for LOTS of taxes and programs I don't use. BUT, that is how a SOCIETY WORKS. I pay for things I may not use, you pay for things YOU may not use, some people get some benefits, others get a lot of benefits, some get few.

I can see farther than the tip of MY OWN NOSE and care about other people, so I am willing to pay taxes for many things I never use, and never will. I guess this plan divides the "I care about other people" people from the "I only think about my own fat a**" people. SOME of us actually care about other people and are willing to PAY for benefits even if WE don't benefit from these rights ourselves. You may choose to ONLY care about programs that benefit yourself.

Have a selfish day.

I would not have believed this until know but I do believe it. A person over 65 verses a 43 year old will be accepted before a elder who will probably die soon anyway, why waste the money? It wont be put quite that way but the end result will be the same. Unborn babys have no rights, they are better off dead than in an unmarried house hold They are considered a mistake, as Pres. Obama has said, Why should his daughter ruin her life for a mistake. Sad ,now life is a mistake, God have mercy on us. Everyone is talking about rights, where are the unborn rights? What happened to responsibility? How do we learn from our mistakes if we are never responsible for them in the first place? What kind of message are we sending our children? If you were to drown baby kittens, you could be proscutedd, but abort a baby even if it s almost full term, ok, no problem. Do we hold life in such little value? Thank goodness some people have their babies even though they know they will have defects. Yes, I agree we need better health care but dont forget babys get it know and so do the mothers of the babys. we need insurance reform, we need to go back to hospital not competing , so much abuse, tests that have not been performed and outragious, peices for tests to save your life. If you think medicare is so great just ask the people on it . goverment runs and regulates it . Most doctors dont want it and it doesnt cover that much. People who say its good havent been on it, they dont have a clue, no one wants goverment run healthcare, We just want health care , plain and simple.

Study: Health Care Reform Mandate Will Punish Employers, Kill Jobs

A provision in President Obama's health care reform plan that requires businesses to offer health insurance to their workers or face a federal tax would cost employers at least $49 billion dollars a year, putting 5.2 million employees at risk of unemployment or underemployment, according to a new study....

Your whole article is based on how our health coverage is now. HR 3200 is what it will be if passed.Once again, your comments are merely rants, not well thought out or informative. Take time to read HR 3200, good luck understanding it, because most of Congress have said it doesn't make any sense.
It is good that you chose to be a doctor, but please open your eyes and ears and stop following all the sheep that jump over the bank because of the leader decides to go that way, in this case, Obama.

I believe that comments like yours are more dangerous that Newt Gingrich or Sarah Palin. I have been in the position of seeking care for my daughter who was "terminally" ill. Today, she would be refused treatment. Fortunately, she was accepted into a program that offered her a 70% success rate in terminal patients. I believe it is naive to be critcal of the people who are speaking out in fear. The questions that have been asked at the town hall meetings have been based on direct quotes from the plan being suggested. You suggest that we must accept the proposed plan because the fact is that all people need healthcare. I remember the disaster of HMO's back in the 80's when people were turned down for care because it was not "in the plan". Can you really state that the plan being proposed is any better than that? The percentages have increased that more people want their own health care and do not want the government involved. Have you ever turned away a patient who came for help and refused them care because they could not pay? Emergency rooms are filled with people seeking care and no insurance. So, is the subject how to hospitals and doctors get paid or who gets treated and who doesnt? You can check my researched articles at: http://www.examiner.com/x-16128-Ch...
