Unsolicited AdviceToday has been a good day. After weeks of preparation, my wife, mother, and oldest daughter headed over to a nearby school early this morning to prepare and set up for my daughter's Girl Scout troop's involvement in the local Relay for Life. Now for those who don't know (as I did not until just a few short weeks ago), the Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's premiere event. It allows for a single community to host a fundraising event where the proceeds go to fighting cancer and increasing awareness of cancer prevention and treatment.
As my wife was the team captain for my daughter's Girl Scout troop, I was given a bird's eye view of all the many hours of preparation needed to stage an event such as this. And while I am so proud of how my wife organized my daughter's troop to be ready for this day, I was also reminded of how strong and generous the human spirit can be when I arrived a couple hours later with my two younger children at the opening ceremony. In front of hundreds of participants ready to walk for the next 24 hours, the emcee graciously began by taking everyone through the history and significance of this event, only to be followed by cancer survivors sharing their amazing stories as well.
And then those with purple event shirts, the cancer survivors...my mother included...walked the ceremonial first lap with their heads head high. And at that particular moment, I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. As I mentioned above, it was a moment which reminded me there is something at the core of each and everyone of us that goes beyond our desires to satisfy "the me", and rather make us think about "the we".
So where am I headed with this? Well, I realize not everyone is capable of financial donations during these trying times, but maybe, just maybe you can find a little time and donate it to someone else, to something else. I make it a point of trying not to make promises, but I'll do the next best thing and give you my word the greater good will be served.

For the GREATER GOOD I think DR Jermey should do a naughty calender what does everyone else think?????
I don't believe that survivors are heros, certainly I'm not. I was terrified from start to finish and even the thought that it may come back terrifies me. Besides nobody gave me a choice and given the choice I would never have had cancer. But I do feel that I need to give back to the cause that undoubtedly saved me and many like me through its contribution to research.
Just because you cannot do everything, you should not lose heart and not do anything. (And if you are someone accepting contributions, please do accept $2 as gratefully as you accept $200. Especially in times like these. When the $2 contributor has $200, he will come back to those who were kind to him at $2.)
Donations can help change a life or even save a life, there are so many ways that a person can donate money, clothes, donating time with feeding the homeless, so many many ways.
This was a good reminder for people, we tend to get caught up at times and forget whats really important, and that is giving back or helping
someone out.
