In the northern part of the world, Fall is upon us. Here in sunny Southern California we are getting some much needed rain. For many cold and rainy weather means warm jackets, scarves, hot soup and indoor fun while for others it can be the beginning of an emotionally challenging time of year. Some may say that gloomy weather is conducive to being more contemplative and introspective and the very fact that we tend to be slightly more sedentary during this time of the year may help to explain this. Therapists do tend to see an increase in depressive symptoms in clients, and even an appearance of depression in otherwise non symptomatic individuals, during this time of the year.
These feelings can be called the Winter Blues or may even meet the criteria for Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. Most people with SAD notice the symptoms present themselves in the Fall and continue through the Winter Months. The symptoms are similar to those of a Clinical Depression such as, a feeling of hopelessness, change in appetite (craving carbohydrates or sweets beyond the typical seasonal slight bump in calories), poor sleep patterns, inability to concentrate and a general feeling of malaise.
We all have down days and this is normal. Sometimes the impending Holidays bring with it stress and anxiety about family gatherings or social pressure but SAD is more profound than just those common emotions. If your down days seem to be more frequent than your positive ones, if you are having trouble finding joy in your life, if your emotions are getting in the way of your normal functioning, if you notice the persistent presence of the symptoms listed above then it is time to consult with your doctor. Don’t ignore these symptoms as they may be a sign of a more severe depression on the horizon.
Treatment for SAD includes psychotherapy, medication and light therapy (phototherapy). The lack of sunshine can contribute not only to greater health issues but to depression and a general feeling of gloom. Light therapy is a unique and specialized treatment and can be discussed with your doctor if it turns out that you are suffering from SAD. At a minimum, discuss your feelings with a trusted friend or family member to help you to determine if what you are experiencing is beyond just rainy days getting you down.
I do HATE the winter and the short days, but my brother and my
son both walked in the rain with me. Hopefully, it will rain more
here this year.
