Symptoms, diagnosis and connection with Renal Cell

Not quite sure of what von Hippel-Lindau Disease is, but ran into it when reading about renal cell cancer. I'm now concerned, as my husband has renal cell cancer, and I have two children with very prominent cafe au lait spots, which I have read is indicative of von Hippel Lindau. Can anyone tell me the connection between the two, how VHL is diagnosed, it's connection to renal cell cancer and whether I need to follow up for my kids with their cafe au lait spots?
