Films about death/bereavement

I read somewhere in the very earliest days of my loss that it is good to watch films that might help get in touch with the grief and sadness, providing a safe outlet for tears and mourning. (I know, most of us don't need help being sad!) But sometimes films can help me articulate a feeling that I am having trouble expressing. And watching others in the same situation (even though they're actors--the brain doesn't really know the difference) really helps by making me feel not so alone.
I will list a couple of films that have helped me (no guarantee for anyone else); please add any that might have helped you. The Pilot's Wife (about a secret life) Moonlight Mile Catch and Release (also a secret life) Bonneville I'm also watching the Showtime series called "Dead Like Me." It's very offbeat and witty. The humor is dark, but it offers a creative way of looking at death. Posted on 11/02/09, 01:11 pm |

Haven't seen the movies, Dead like me is an old fave of mine...once you get past the main characters childish appearance it's a great show...
fave sad movies, boy there are a ton of them but none come to mind at the moment!!! ah wait....saving private ryan a military movie on death and sadness and We were soldiers...also good. PS I love you, pretty recent death drama.

I watched Premonition last night on TV. Though I had no premonition of my husband's passing (I WAS having premonitions of MY own death) I felt a lot of what the woman was feeling...like she was going mad, not knowing if her husband was dead or alive.

I have to agree - sometimes it helps to have a catalyst, of sorts. I like old movies, and for some reason Forest Gump made me sob uncontrollably. Maybe it was the scene with his mother (ya think?) There've been others, but my widow brain can't remember - have to think!

The Time Travelers Wife, The Painted Veil, What Dreams May Come. These are the three movies I lean to for a good cry fest. I just think a good cleansing helps the soul/heart heal.

Catch and Release came out before my husband died and we watched it. I thought how awful for her to have to live through that and how could she fall for his friend? I now know that it is possible to feel again..even though I am not there yet... I also loved BONNEVILLE. My husband was cremated. I take some ashes eveywhere we go for vacation and spread them. We always wanted to see the world together and this is my way of taking him with.

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I thought of another--it's a French film with subtitles called "Under the Sand." It's about a woman who won't believe that her husband is really dead. It's very slow moving, but I thought it was quite beautiful.

Movies sure are a catalyst for intense feelings. When I saw Return to Me I broke out crying when they wheeled the star's wife into the ER. My wife died of cancer but that brought back memories of when she was in the hospital where she passed away.
Anyway, I have noticed that many movies tend to have young women die of some disease like cancer and it helps young men become more sensitive, mature people: Love Story is a classic, Walk to Remember, Here on Earth (I just saw this tonight). Young men tend to die in wars. These are good movies to cry to.

I agree that watching movies is a great outlet for the tears & one way to feel a little less alone in our grief. These movies had that effect on me:
Reign Over me Things We Lost in the Fire Men Don't Leave

I watched Notebook with my husband and kids and it is a very good movie. It does not have to be about death, I cry whenever I see a movie that both my husband and I watched together. The last movie we went to see at the theater was Madea goes to jail and now whenever I watch it tears come flowing down. It was brings beautiful memories but at the same time it is painful.
